Big Ten Predictions and Best Bets – October 31, 2020
Don’t let Halloween spook you out of placing college football bets. I’ve got some Big Ten predictions that’ll help give you a push.
- Michigan State vs. Michigan
- Purdue vs. Illinois
- Indiana vs. Rutgers
- Northwestern vs. Iowa
- Ohio State vs. Penn State
After highlighting each of the five conference games taking place on Saturday, I’ll leave you with my top three betting picks. Let’s start with the biggie in Ann Arbor.
Michigan State vs. Michigan Predictions
- Michigan to beat Michigan State
- Predicted Total: 47-51
The Wolverines looked sharp in their opener, dispatching the Golden Gophers 49-24 in Minneapolis. On the flip side, the Spartans lost to Rutgers in East Lansing in Mel Tucker’s first game at the helm. Talk about a disastrous way of beginning your tenure.
Rutgers has 28 at halftime. More than it has scored in a full Big Ten game since Nov. 4, 2017. Leads Michigan State 28-13.— Pat Forde (@ByPatForde) October 24, 2020
Michigan State’s defense held the Scarlet Knights offense in check in the second half, and quarterback Rocky Lombardi threw for over 300 yards and completed over 72% of his throws. Nonetheless, two interceptions and a nonexistent rushing attack don’t bode well heading into the Big House.
Michigan just finished toying with what is supposed to be a pretty good Minnesota program. Look for Joe Milton to carve up the Spartans and lead Jim Harbaugh’s bunch to a 2-0 record.
Purdue vs. Illinois Predictions
- Purdue to beat Illinois
- Predicted Total: 56-60
Senior QB Brandon Peters was awful last Friday in Madison. The Fighting Illini head home to take on an upstart Boilermakers team at noon EST on Halloween day. It appears that Rondale Moore won’t be available for Jeff Brohm this weekend, but that won’t stop Aidan O’Connell from flinging the pigskin around. David Bell is as talented as a receiver as there is in America and Milton Wright is more than capable of winning one-on-one matchups.
More insight into this game is available in this Purdue vs. Illinois pick, but the summary is I think Lovie Smith’s group should be able to hang around just enough to cover the spread.
Indiana vs. Rutgers Predictions
- Indiana to beat Rutgers
- Predicted Total: 52-56
An overtime victory last weekend against 8th-ranked Penn State gives the Hoosiers a ton of momentum heading into this Halloween matchup. And while Rutgers was able to drum up some positive vibes of their own, my Big Ten prediction here is that Indiana emerges.
Whether Tom Allen’s crew can cover the 11.5-point spread – that remains to be seen.
The Scarlet Knights showed a lot of fight in their double-digit win versus Michigan State, but we expected the Spartans to struggle at the outset. Plus Rutgers went 0-9 in Big Ten play in 2019.
Perhaps positive strides are being taken in Piscataway, but pump the brakes on the idea that they are better than Indiana.
Northwestern vs. Iowa Predictions
- Iowa to beat Northwestern
- Predicted Total: 44-48
A post detailing a Northwestern vs. Iowa betting pick can be found below, but before you go any further, I’ll point out that backing Iowa is one of my best college football bets of the week.
The Wildcats are riding high after lambasting the Terrapins, but a trip to Kinnick Stadium presents a much stiffer test. Especially considering that Kirk Ferentz and company should be agitated after dropping a game to Purdue.
Ohio State vs. Penn State Predictions
- Ohio State to beat Penn State
- Predicted Total: 64-68 points
Of all the Big Ten games being played on October 31, the one in University Park is the one garnering the most national attention. Easily one of the best college football games to watch on Halloween, the high-powered Buckeyes offense is set to take flight against the Nittany Lions.
Unfortunately for Penn State, no Noah Cain means it’s up to Sean Clifford to carry the load.

Ryan Day is aware of what is needed out of Ohio State in order to stamp their ticket in the College Football Playoff. The last thing he’s going to do is let a depleted James Franklin team stand in his way.
Big Ten Picks for October 31
- Iowa (-2.5) -105
- Illinois (+7.5) -110
- Ohio State (-11.5) -110
Be sure to shop your Big Ten predictions across the top college football betting sites. By doing so you can latch onto Iowa at reduced juice, and you can grab hold of Illinois +7.5 instead of +7.
Heck, Ohio State is laying 12.5 points at some of the online sportsbooks. I was amped up to spot the Buckeyes at -11.5 at BetNow.
The under in the Michigan State/Michigan game is somewhat appealing, and a safe NCAAF bet is to lock in Indiana on the money line. However, my top Big Ten picks for the weekend are the three bets showcased in this segment.
Do with that information what you wish.
