Round 9 of the 2022 AFL season continues this Saturday, May 14, with five matches on the schedule. Five of the top eight are in action on Saturday, so there should be plenty of high-quality footy on display.

Today, I will be taking you through my tips and predictions for Saturday’s AFL matches. Having scoured the top-ranked Aussie Rules betting sites, I will also share my AFL betting picks for Saturday with you.

Let’s get down to business.

AFL Odds for Saturday, May 14, 2022

  • Hawthorn (3.25) vs. Richmond (1.33)
  • North Melbourne (6.00) vs. Port Adelaide (1.12)
  • St Kilda (2.05) vs. Geelong (1.75)
  • Sydney (1.28) vs. Essendon (3.75)
  • Adelaide (4.50) vs. Brisbane (1.20)

According to Saturday’s AFL odds at Betway, four teams are favored to win away from home. Richmond, Port Adelaide, Geelong, and Brisbane are all expected to triumph on their travels, leaving Sydney as the sole home favorite.

As you can see, the bookmakers believe that St Kilda stands the best chance of upsetting the AFL odds on Saturday. The Saints and Geelong are locked on 20 points on the AFL ladder, so that is destined to be an intriguing battle.

AFL Predictions for Saturday, May 14

Let’s dive into my predictions for all five AFL matches taking place this Saturday. Once my predictions are out of the way, I will go over the best AFL bets for Saturday’s clashes.

Hawthorn vs. Richmond Prediction

When Hawthorn kicked off the season with back-to-back wins over North Melbourne and Port Adelaide, things were looking good for Sam Mitchell’s men. But it’s been all downhill since then.

The Hawks have lost five of their last six matches and head into Round 9 on a three-match losing run. As a result, they have slipped to twelfth in the standings – four points behind eighth-place Richmond.

The Tigers come into Round 9 on the back of a big win against Collingwood, thanks largely to six goals from Tom Lynch. After kicking seven goals in Richmond’s Round 7 demolition of West Coast, Lynch finds himself atop the Coleman Medal leaderboard.

  • Tom Lynch (Richmond) – 27
  • Charlie Curnow (Carlton) – 25
  • Jeremy Cameron (Geelong) – 24
  • Tom Hawkins (Geelong) – 23
  • Peter Wright (Essendon) – 23

Having won three of their previous five outings, the Tigers appear to be getting back to their best. With Lynch leading the way, Richmond shouldn’t struggle to overcome off-form Hawthorn.

Prediction for Hawthorn vs. Richmond: Richmond to Win

North Melbourne vs. Port Adelaide Prediction

It is no secret that Port Adelaide made a dismal start to the campaign. Despite finishing second on last season’s ladder, the 2020 minor premiers lost each of their opening five matches this year.

Nonetheless, they have turned things around in recent weeks. Following victories over the Western Bulldogs, St Kilda, and West Coast, the Power heads into Round 9 on a three-match winning streak.

By contrast, North Melbourne is on a six-match losing run. The Kangaroos managed to notch just 24 points as they were crushed by Fremantle last weekend. Worse still, they conceded 100+ points for the fifth time in six outings.

You probably won’t be surprised to learn that I’m backing in-form Port Adelaide to heap more misery on struggling North Melbourne.

Prediction for North Melbourne vs. Port Adelaide: Port Adelaide to Win

St Kilda vs. Geelong Prediction

As I already mentioned, seventh-place St Kilda and fifth-place Geelong are locked on 20 points. However, the Cats (126.3%) lead the Saints (117.3%) due to their superior percentage.

After securing five straight wins between Round 2 and Round 6, the Saints suffered back-to-back losses against Port Adelaide and Melbourne. Granted, they gave a good account of themselves against Port and Melbourne. But they were unable to avoid defeat.

On the flip side,
the Cats have won two of their past three encounters. When you look at the bigger picture, they have won four of their previous six.

Although St Kilda and Geelong have the same number of points, it feels like the momentum is with the Cats. I expect the Saints to give the Cats a run for their money, but I’m confident that Geelong will come out on top.

Prediction for St Kilda vs. Geelong: Geelong to Win

Sydney vs. Essendon Prediction

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Essendon has made a terrible start to the season. Having lost six of their eight matches in 2022, the Bombers find themselves third from bottom in the standings.

At the opposite end of the ladder, Sydney occupies sixth place. Although the Swans come into Round 9 on a two-match losing stretch, there is no hiding the fact that they have won five of their eight encounters this year.

In my eyes, Saturday’s clash against lowly Essendon provides Sydney with the perfect opportunity to return to winning ways.

Prediction for Sydney vs. Essendon: Sydney to Win

Adelaide vs. Brisbane Prediction

Brisbane is sitting pretty in third place after picking up seven wins across the opening eight rounds. After winning their first three matches, the Lions lost to Geelong in Round 4 but have since bounced back with four straight victories.

Last weekend, Charlie Cameron and Hugh McCluggage both kicked four goals as the Queenslanders notched a huge 75-point win over West Coast. Consequently, no team has booted more points than Brisbane this year.

  • Brisbane – 851
  • Richmond – 782
  • Geelong – 754
  • Collingwood – 752
  • Sydney – 745

Meanwhile, Adelaide suffered a second successive loss last time out. That means the Crows have lost five of their eight matches in 2022. Despite showing glimpses of promise, the South Australians should be no match for high-flying Brisbane.

Prediction for Adelaide vs. Brisbane: Brisbane to Win

Top AFL Picks for Saturday, May 14

  • Hawthorn vs. Richmond – Richmond –18.5 Handicap (1.90)
  • North Melbourne vs. Port Adelaide – Port Adelaide by 40+ Points (2.00)
  • St Kilda vs. Geelong – Geelong to Win (1.75)
  • Sydney vs. Essendon – Sydney –32.5 Handicap (2.37)
  • Adelaide vs. Brisbane – Brisbane by 40+ Points (2.40)

I’m backing both Port Adelaide and Brisbane to win by 40+ points on Saturday. Port is facing the second-worst defense in the competition, while Brisbane has racked up more points than any other team this year.

Elsewhere, I recommend adding handicaps onto the Richmond and Sydney wins to enhance the odds. I’m also backing Geelong to beat St Kilda, given that the Saints have lost each of their previous two matches.
