Western Bulldogs to Beat St Kilda

The Bulldogs and St Kilda are separated by just four points in the AFL ladder. It’s fair to say that both sides have struggled for consistency throughout 2022, so it’s no surprise they find themselves just outside the top eight.

Although the Saints are four points better off, I expect the Dogs to win this clash. The Saints have lost four of their last five outings, winning four of their previous ten. Meanwhile, the Dogs have won six of their past ten games.

Collingwood to Beat Adelaide

Last weekend, the Magpies extended their winning streak to seven games with a seven-point victory over North Melbourne. As a result, Collingwood sits sixth in the standings – eight points inside the top eight.

At the opposite end of the standings, Adelaide sits fifteenth – 24 points behind Collingwood. Having lost 11 of their 16 games this season, the Crows look set for another defeat at the hands of in-form Collingwood.

Brisbane to Beat GWS Giants

Brisbane suffered a shock defeat to Essendon in Round 17. Naturally, the Lions will be eager to get back on track this weekend. Although the Queenslanders have recorded four wins and four draws across the past eight rounds, they remain in fourth place.

On the flip side, thirteenth-place Greater Western Sydney trails Brisbane by 24 points. The Giants have only managed to win five of their 16 encounters this season, so I expect them to hand the Lions an easy win on Saturday.

Richmond to Beat North Melbourne

Will North Melbourne ever win a game of footy again?

The Kangaroos head into Round 18 on a 14-game losing streak after last weekend’s defeat to Collingwood. Consequently, they remain at the foot of the ladder with a sorry record of 1-15 this year.

As for the Tigers, they find themselves eighth – 32 points clear of the Roos. The 2020 premiers have won seven of their previous ten outings, so I’m confident that North will suffer a fifteenth defeat on the spin this weekend.

Geelong to Beat Carlton

Thanks to an impressive 28-point victory over Melbourne in Round 17, Geelong sits atop the AFL ladder. As a result, the Cats carry a seven-game winning run into Round 18. Can Carlton break their hot streak?

MOST GOALS IN THE 2022 AFL SEASON

  • Charlie Curnow, Carlton (50)
  • Jeremy Cameron, Geelong (46)
  • Tom Hawkins, Geelong (43)
  • Aaron Naughton, Western Bulldogs (42)
  • Max King, St Kilda (40)

Granted, the Blues have the competition’s leading goalkicker in their ranks. But the Cats have Jeremey Cameron AND Tom Hawkins. With that in mind, I’m confident that Geelong will get the better of Carlton.

Fremantle to Beat Sydney

The Dockers racked up 111 points as they thrashed St Kilda by 41 last time out. Nat Fyfe and Michael Frederick each kicked three goals in the demolition, while Andrew Brayshaw orchestrated the midfield show.

Not only have the Western Australians won five of their last six games, but they have also won 11 of their previous 14. Consequently, they find themselves level with first-place Geelong and second-place Melbourne on 48 points.

Despite sitting just eight points behind in seventh place, Sydney is nowhere near Freo’s level at the moment. The Swans have won five and lost five of their past ten games, emphasizing their inconsistency.

Hawthorn to Beat West Coast

At the end of last month, the Eagles finally snapped a nine-game losing streak with a narrow victory against Essendon. However, they swiftly returned to losing ways – falling to Richmond and Carlton while conceding 100+ points.

Granted, the Hawks have also been one of the worst teams in the league this year. But they have still managed to pick up five wins. Having claimed a measly two wins this season, the Eagles will struggle to get the better of Hawthorn.

Melbourne to Beat Port Adelaide

The Demons kicked off their campaign with a ten-game winning streak before losing four of their next six outings. Despite their recent slump, they are still joint-top of the ladder – thanks largely to the exploits of disposal-machine Clayton Oliver.

MOST DISPOSALS IN THE 2022 AFL SEASON

  • Clayton Oliver, Melbourne (553)
  • Jack Macrae, Western Bulldogs (505)
  • Lachie Neale, Brisbane (497)
  • Andrew Brayshaw, Fremantle (494)
  • Sam Walsh, Carlton (484)

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Port Adelaide has been one of the most inconsistent teams in the AFL this year. Having registered eight wins and eight losses in 2022, the Power should be no match for the defending premiers.

Essendon to Beat Gold Coast

There is no denying that Stuart Dew’s boys have upped their game this season. Indeed, the Suns find themselves just four points outside the top eight with 16 games in the books following a much-improved start to the campaign.

That said, Essendon has also turned the corner recently. The Bombers have won three of their previous four clashes, dispatching St Kilda, Sydney, and Brisbane in the process. For that reason, I’m backing Essendon to beat Gold Coast on Sunday.

Top AFL Picks for Round 18

North Melbourne vs. Richmond – Richmond (-40.5)1.90
Adelaide vs. Collingwood – Collingwood (-10.5)1.90
Carlton vs. Geelong – Geelong to Win1.65
Essendon vs. Gold Coast – Essendon to Win2.00

The Tigers are priced at just 1.10 to beat the Kangaroos, who carry a 14-game losing streak in Round 18. Given that North Melbourne has the second-worst defensive record in the comp, I’m backing Richmond to win by at least 40.5 points.

I also recommend throwing a handicap into the mix if you’re betting on Adelaide vs. Collingwood. The Magpies have won each of their previous seven games, so I expect them to make light work of struggling Adelaide.

In my eyes, the odds for Geelong and Essendon are more than good enough. The Cats head into Round 18 on a seven-game winning streak, while the Bombers have won three of their previous four outings.
