Best Matchups Bets for the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions

| January 5, 2021 8:32 am PDT

Those of you who bet golf matchups online are probably used to coughing up some juice.

Good riddance to that. Welcome to the land of the “plus-money” picks.

In this segment of my weekly PGA Tour previews, the goal is to attack the discrepancies at the betting sites. You’ll see what I mean with the following trio of Sentry Tournament of Champions head-to-head picks.

Justin Thomas vs. Dustin Johnson

Justin Thomas+115
Dustin Johnson-138

Sitting “1-2” in my 2021 golf power rankings, it’s safe to say that Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas are in for big 2021s. And while I’m certainly not actively trying to fade the world’s #1-ranked player, I did notice that JT was installed at +100 versus DJ in a Sentry TOC matchup at MyBookie.

I didn’t think much of it, although spotting Thomas at +115 in this H2H at is simply too scrumptious to ignore.

Dustin may or may not need time to kick things into gear, but he sure as heck has been resting on his laurels since triumphing at Augusta (and rightfully so). A quick scroll through Paulina’s IG stories will confirm that theory.

Meanwhile, JT is hungry for a quick start to the season and has been lights-out at this venue. The defending champ of this event also won here in 2015.

Justin is 32-under-par during his last eight rounds at the Plantation Course.

Marc Leishman vs. Billy Horschel

Marc Leishman+159
Billy Horschel-193

Let’s put Marc Leishman’s slump to close out 2020 aside for a moment and zero in on his performances at the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort. 2018 and 2019 were the only times Marc has competed at the TOC since 2014. He finished 7th and 4th, respectively.

Billy Horschel placed 11th and 22nd the last two times he was here, and it’s not like Billy has been playing superbly.

Billy Horschel’s Final Eight Starts of 2020
Date Tournament Finish
8/27-8/30 BMW Championship T33
9/4-9/7 TOUR Championship 30th (Last)
9/17-9/20 US Open T38
10/15-10/18 CJ Cup T28
10/22-10/25 Zozo Championship 69th
11/12-11/15 Masters T38
12/3-12/6 Mayakoba Golf Classic T5

Just one top-25 among his last eight showings.

Capturing mega-value (like this particular Sentry Tournament of Champions matchup pick) is one way to stay ahead of the bookies.

Jon Rahm vs. Patrick Reed

Jon Rahm-150
Patrick Reed+120

I’m well aware that Jon Rahm fired a 59 the first time he put his new Callaway sticks in the bag. I’m also cognizant that Rahm has putted with a Taylor Made Spider putter for the better part of his career.

Getting comfortable with his new Odyssey flat-stick “under the gun” could take some time getting used to.

Did I mention that Rahm tends to get down on himself when things aren’t going his way?

Enough potential negatives about “Rahmbo.” The real reason this is one of the Sentry TOC matchup picks I’m endorsing is because Reed is my pick to hoist the trophy on Sunday.

More on that below.

More Sentry Tournament of Champions Picks

Yes, Patrick Reed is my pick to win the tournament. However, instead of stopping there, I’m happy to double down on “Captain America” with these Sentry Tournament of Champions head-to-head picks.
