Best Matchups Bets for the 2020 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

Picking a winner in a 144-man field on the PGA Tour is like pulling the lever on a slot machine. You’re enticed by the big return, but chances are, you’re going home empty-handed.

We’re in Vegas, so I see no problem rolling the dice on a few golfers to win. On the other hand, the best way to make some money is to attack the matchups aggressively.

On that note, here are my top Shriners Hospitals for Children Open head-to-head picks.

Paul Casey vs. Jason Kokrak

Paul Casey-125
Jason Kokrak+105

I’m not actively trying to fade Paul Casey, and in fact, am a huge fan of the Englishman’s game. This SHCO matchup pick is more about pursuing Jason Kokrak with the plus-money attached.

Kokrak has quietly strung together four consecutive finishes of 17th or better and should have no issues carrying his positive vibes into this venue. 9th in SG: Off-the-Tee last season means the 35-year-old bomber should have loads of birdie opportunities. A perfect conversion rate from 4’ (102/102) tells me Jason’s stroke is locked in.

Casey is rested since his 17th at Winged Foot, but he’s never teed it up at TPC Summerlin before.

Doc Redman vs. Si Woo Kim

Doc Redman-102
Si Woo Kim-118

BetOnline installed both of these players at +8000 to win. Doc Redman is the better player according to the Official World Golf Ranking (Redman – 85th, Kim – 104th), and Doc played better than Si Woo last week in Jackson. Redman also beat Kim last year in Vegas during his debut at this event.

Still not convinced that latching onto the Clemson product at -102 makes sense in this  Shriners Hospitals for Children Open head-to-head pick?

Let’s compare their last four starts.

Si Woo Kim hasn’t cracked the top 35 in any of them. Doc Redman, who won the 2017 U.S. Amateur on the West Coast at Riviera, has two 3rds and a 28th.

Sebastian Munoz vs. Denny McCarthy

Sebastian Munoz-117
Denny McCarthy-103

I’ve read lots of Shriners Hospitals for Children Open betting previews that preach about targeting the best putters. Well, Denny McCarthy not only led the PGA Tour in SG: Putting in each of the last two years, but his performance on the greens in 2019-20 (.988) was the second-best putting season of the ShotLink era.

On top of being a wizard with the wand, McCarthy arrives in Sin City with all sorts of momentum brewing. Denny finished 15th here in 2018 and 9th in 2019. Throw in his T6 last week at the Sanderson Farms Championship and you get a sense that a big week is in store.

Munoz is a fine player in his own right, but he missed the cut at last years SHCO and the stats say that putting is his kryptonite. I’m all over McCarthy at -103.
