Best Bets for US Open Matches – Wednesday, September 2, 2020

Most of the big guns are still alive in the 2020 US Open, both in the men’s and the women’s singles events. That’s to be expected so early in the tournament when the top seeds meet mostly modest opponents.
And yet, there are plenty of exciting matches out there and they provide excellent opportunities to make some money. I share my US Open best betting picks for Wednesday, September 2. All of my recommended bets include the latest odds and reasoning.
Angelique Kerber (-4.5) vs. Anna-Lena Friedsam
I believe that Angelique Kerber is one of the dark horses in this tournament. The experienced German already has three Grand Slam titles and the spirit of a true champion. In the absence of so many top players, Kerber could be a huge threat despite her age.
She started her journey with a solid victory over a tricky opponent such as Ajla Tomljanovic in the opener and now faces her countrywomen Anna-Lena Friedsam. With all due respect to the younger German, she simply is not on the same level as Kerber.
The opening victory if Friedsam’s first in a Grand Slam since 2016 and she is currently outside of the WTA top 100. Kerber should have no problems whatsoever on Wednesday and the price of -110 for her to cover the -4.5 games handicap is among the US Open best bets for September 2, in my opinion.
- Pick: Angelique Kerber (-4.5); -110
Karolina Pliskova (-4) vs. Caroline Garcia
One of the most anticipated matches of the US Open 2020 second round certainly is between Karolina Pliskova and Caroline Garcia. Both seeded players had an awesome start of the competition and with ease but against rather mediocre opponents.
The top seed will be desperate for a good run in New York because she is yet to win a Grand Slam despite her long and consistent career in the elite. I believe that Pliskova views the US Open as her best chance for that ultimate honor and she will give everything this year.
Garcia certainly is a dangerous opponent and one of the tougher draws so early in the tournament, but she’s mostly a clay specialist. If this was the Roland Garros, it would’ve been a coin toss.
On the hard courts in New York, I’m pretty confident that Pliskova will beat Garcia without too much trouble. In fact, I expected the spread line to be around the 5 games mark and I’m more than willing to take -118 for the favorite to cover the -4 handicap that most US Open betting sites offer.
- Pick: Pliskova (-4); -118
More US Open Betting Picks for Wednesday, September 2, 2020
Here are two more US Open betting picks for Wednesday.
- Pick: Kyle Edmund (+9) vs. Novak Djokovic; -101
Some people might think I’m crazy going against Djokovic here, but I believe that Kyle Edmund could cause some trouble in round two.
The British player didn’t start the US Open 2020 well and lost the opening set against the promising youngster Alexander Bublik. Edmund came back to win the next three sets and looked solid in the process.
He has beaten Djokovic before and he knows well how tough the task will be. I’m under no illusion that the world number 1 will get knocked out, but he won’t find it as easy as in the first round, I reckon.
I believe that Edmund could stay within a respectable distance in at least two sets which is enough a reason to back him to stay within the 9 games handicap too.
- Pick:Alexander Zverev (-6) vs. Brandon Nakashima; -117
The 5th seed Alexander Zverev was involved in one of the most exciting matches in the first round. The German prevailed over Kevin Anderson in a tough battle that went four sets. The prodigy should have a much easier time in the second round.
He’s about to face the 19-year old Brandon Nakashima on Wednesday. The American upset Paolo Lorenzi and showed maturity beyond his age. And yet, he would struggle to keep the same composure against one of the stars of male tennis. I expect a comfortable victory for Zverev in straight sets, so the price of -117 for him to cover the handicap of -6 games looks solid to me.
