Best Bets for US Open Matches – Thursday, September 3, 2020
The first three days of the 2020 US Open were entertaining and we already had some surprising results. The top seed in the women’s singles is gone and there were some stunning comebacks from seemingly impossible positions.
Naturally, there were plenty of betting opportunities along the way and Thursday is not an exception. I share my US Open betting picks for the fourth day of the tournament and they all include the latest odds and reasoning.
Felix Auger Aliassime (-3.5) vs. Andy Murray
I loved Andy Murray’s comeback in the first round of the 2020 US Open. The former world number one battled through injuries for so long that it was refreshing to see him winning a Grand Slam match. He was in a tough spot against Nishioka but found a way to prevail.
I’m afraid he won’t be able to do the same in the next round, though. The Brit is facing the rising Canadian star Felix Auger Alliassime who had a lot of trouble in the first round as well. The youngster barely beat Thiago Monteiro, but the Brazilian’s first serve stayed over 70% over four long sets which is rare to see.
I don’t think that Andy Murray could put his opponent under the same pressure and I’m not sure that he will have enough left in the tank after such a gruesome start. He has the experience on his side, but I believe that Aliassime should be able to win this one.
The prices of the top US Open betting sites are surprisingly close and the spread is set at the -3.5 mark which is way too low, in my opinion.
- Pick: Felix Auger Aliassime (-3.5); -117
Borna Coric (+6.5) vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas
I will be looking forward to the match between Coric and Tsitsipas as we might watch these two going at it often for the years to come. They are part of the new wave in male tennis and I won’t be shocked if both men win a Grand Slam trophy eventually.
Tsitsipas certainly looks closer to a big breakthrough and his performance in the US Open 2020 has been stellar. The man is yet to lose a set and his aggressive style brought two quick victories in the first rounds.
And yet, the Greek prodigy met modest opponents that he was expected to beat. Borna Coric is the first true obstacle and the match should be much closer. The Croatian has plenty of experience at the highest level and the potential to be a star as well.
He won’t go down without a fight and I’m not sure that the sportsbooks got this one right. The handicap of +6.5 in favor of Coric looks way too high and I believe it’s one of the best US Open picks for Thursday.
- Pick: Coric (+6.5); -118
Garbine Muguruza vs. Tsvetana Pironkova Over 19
I believe that the match between Garbine Muguruza and Tsvetana Pironkova has the potential to be one of the most interesting fixtures on Thursday. The Spaniard is a huge favorite and that’s to be expected, but the Bulgarian won’t go down easily.
Pironkova suffered a shoulder injury in 2017 and then gave birth to her first child in 2018 which is why she was out of the tour for a couple of years. She unexpectedly decided to return for the US Open and it seems like she’s in fine form.
The Bulgarian destroyed Ludmilla Samsonova in the opening round and looked very strong. I don’t think she will be good enough to knock out an opponent like Muguruza, but she could cause a lot of trouble.
I won’t be shocked if we see three sets in this one, but the over 19 line could be covered with ease even in two. The price of -109 for that wager looks like one of the best bets for Thursday and I’m taking it.
- Pick: Over 19; -109
