Belmont Park Picks – Saturday, September 19, 2020
Belmont Park hosts the Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes today, headlining a ten-race card of lucrative maiden, allowance, and claiming races. The purse for this Grade I stakes race is a quarter of a million dollars. Incidentally, the stakes race has been held every year since 1979, but you may know it better as Rare Perfume Breeders’ Cup, which was its name until 1998.
Remember that you can always find the full slate of Belmont Park’s daily races at one of our recommended racebooks.
Read on for my picks and predictions for Saturday’s richest races at Belmont Park.
Picks for Belmont Park Race 3
This is an allowance race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of 1-1/16 miles on turf for a purse of $67,000.
I’m backing the 3/5 morning line favorite here—Spirit Animal, ridden by Javier Castellano. This four-year-old colt finished in the money four of his seven career starts, winning three of them.
One caveat: Keep an eye out for the 3/1 MTO also-eligible Winston’s Chance, with Kendrick Carmouche in the irons. If this seven-year-old gelding enters the race, you’re going to want to back him: He finished in the money for 22 of his 33 career starts, winning 10 of them.
There are no longshots in this race, so we’ll keep our risk-money in our wallets for the time being, yeah?
- Win (turf): Spirit Animal 3/5
- Win (MTO): Winston’s Chance 3/1
Pick for Belmont Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes
This is the Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes (Grade I), a race for three-year-old fillies running a distance of 1-1/4 miles on turf for a purse of $250,000.
I like the second-favored (9/5) entry in this stakes race: Antoinette, with John R. Vasquez aboard. This filly moneyed seven of her eight career starts, winning three.
Again, no long odds entries in this five-horse race, so no hidden moneymakers. Sad emoji.
- Win: Antoinette 9/5
Pick for Belmont Park Race 6
This is a maiden special weight race for two-year-olds running a distance of one mile for a purse of $63,000.
I like the second-favored (5/2) entry in this race—Likeable, with Luis Saez in the irons. Like the favorite, this colt pulled a second place in his single career start, but his performance in recent workouts has been better. Never mind the other half of the coupled entry. He might do as well as third, but I’m not betting on it.
Incidentally, there’s a 15/1 entry in this race, but the odds would need to be much longer than that to make a show bet worth the risk.
- Win: Likeable 5/2
