Belmont Park Picks – Friday, October 23, 2020

| October 22, 2020 2:40 pm PDT

Belmont Park brings out the stars of thoroughbred racing today with ten maiden and allowance races on turf and on the main track. Expect to see some of the tightest races in weeks as the Ortiz brothers battle it out with each other as well as with John Velazquez, Mannie Franco, and—well, you get the idea.

Remember that while I cover the three richest races at Belmont today, you can always find the full card of races, including entries, jockeys, and wagering options, at one of our top online horse racing betting sites.

Read on for my Belmont Park picks and betting tips for Friday, October 23, 2020.

Pick for Belmont Park Race 1

This is a maiden special weight race for two-year-old fillies running a distance of one mile for a purse of $80,000.

I’m sticking with the 8/5 morning line favorite here—Millefeuille, with Joel Rosario aboard. This filly moneyed her single career start, and has clocked good times in recent workouts, particularly in comparison to the rest of the field.

The longest odds in this five-horse race are 6/1, so I don’t have a value show bet to recommend.

  • Win: Millefeuille 8/5

Pick for Belmont Park Race 9

This is an allowance optional claiming race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of one mile for a purse of $84,000.

All-stars in the irons and solid performers on the ground add up to what may be the best race of the day at Belmont. I’m sticking with the 1/1 favorite in this race—Money Moves, ridden by Luis Saez. This three-year-old colt moneyed three of his four career starts, winning two.

And I wasn’t kidding about the all-stars: Irad Ortiz, Jr., his brother, Jose L. Ortiz, and John R. Velazquez ride the rest of the top four morning line choices, and their mounts have equally impressive records. This could be a nail-biter.

There are no odds longer than 8/1 in this race, and that isn’t enough to warrant the risk of even a show ticket in this field.

  • Win: Money Moves 1/1

Pick for Belmont Park Race 10

This is a maiden special weight race for two-year-olds running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $80,000.

Interestingly enough, the same four top jockeys ride the four morning line favorites in this race, and I’m going with the second-favored (3/1) Scarlett Sky, with John R. Velazquez in the irons. This colt moneyed both of his career starts (both second place).

And while there is no dearth of longshots in this 14-horse race, I see none that have a realistic shot at finishing in the money.

  • Win: Scarlett Sky 3/1
