Belmont Park Picks – Saturday, October 17, 2020
Belmont Park is headlining the ungraded Floral Park Stakes among its ten scheduled thoroughbred races today.
I cover the three richest races at Belmont today, but you can find the full slate list of races, entries, jockeys, and wagering options at one of our top online horse racing betting sites.
In the meantime, here are my Belmont Park picks and betting tips for Saturday, October 17, 2020.
Pick for Belmont Park Race 3
This is an allowance optional claiming race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of one mile for a purse of $70,000.
I’m sticking with the 1/2 favorite in this race—Performer, with Joel Rosario in the irons. This four-year-old colt has won all but the first of his five career starts. The fact that he has not raced since his win in the graded Discovery Stakes at Aqueduct last November shouldn’t be cause for concern. His recent workouts indicate he still knows how the lawn gets mowed.
Neither of the long odds entries in this five-horse race look to finish in the money.
- Win: Performer 1/2
Pick for Belmont Park Race 6
This is a maiden special weight race for two-year-olds running a distance of six furlongs on turf for a purse of $63,000.
And I’m agreeing with the morning line here, as well, and buying a win ticket for the 2/1 favorite, Voter Protection, with veteran jockey Jose Lezcano aboard. This colt has performed well in recent workouts, certainly better than the others in the top four M/L choices.
The long-odds entries in this race are not likely to finish in the money, so let’s save ours.
- Win: Voter Protection 2/1
Picks for Belmont Park Race 9 – Floral Park Stakes
This is the ungraded Floral Park Stakes, a race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of six furlongs on turf for a purse of $80,000.
Looks like me and the morning line should set the date, eh? I’m backing the 3/1 favorite in this race—Mitchell Road, with Junior Alvarado in the irons. This five-year-old mare moneyed 13 of her 17 career starts, winning seven. She most recently pulled a second in the Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes (Grade III) in September.
At 20/1, I have to like Elle’s Town, with Kendrick Carmouche aboard, for a bargain show ticket. This four-year-old filly moneyed 15 of her 22 career starts, winning three.
- Win: Mitchell Road 3/1
- Show: Elle’s Town 20/1
More Racing Tips for Today
Is it just me or does Belmont Park seem a little light in the “profitunity” department today? Well, no matter—I found plenty of underdogs and long-odds prospects at the other two tracks I reviewed for today’s races:
