Belmont Park Picks – Thursday, October 1, 2020

| September 30, 2020 11:55 pm PDT

Belmont Park brings us nine thoroughbred races Thursday, including the Joseph A. Gimma Stakes with its $100,000 purse for the fastest two-year-olds. Along with the stakes race are the usual maiden, allowance, and claiming matches. I pick the winners of the stakes race as well as for a maiden and an allowance race today.

Read on for my Belmont Park picks and betting tips for Thursday, October 1, 2020.

Pick for Belmont Park Race 3

This is a maiden special weight race for New York-foaled three-year-olds running a distance of seven furlongs for a purse of $52,000.

I’m backing the second-favored (5/2) entry in this race—Tackle, with Junior Alvarado in the irons. This colt finished in the money for both of his career starts.

None of the longer-odds competitors in this field justify risking a wager. That goes double for the 30/1 longshot.

  • Win: Tackle 5/2

Picks for Belmont Park Race 4

This is an allowance optional claiming race for New York-foaled three-year-olds running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $59,000.

I’m going with the 6/5 morning line favorite, Graded On a Curve, with Javier Castellano aboard. This four-year-old gelding finished in the money seven of his eight career starts, winning two of them.

If Graded On a curve is scratched and the also-eligible (MTO) I Love Jaxon, ridden by Jose Lezcano comes into play, then bet I Love Jaxon to win.

At 12/1, Pipes, with Kendrick Carmouche aboard, is worth a value show bet. This four-year-old colt moneyed 11 of his 18 career starts, winning three of them.

  • Win: Graded On a Curve 6/5
  • Show: Pipes 12/1

Pick for Belmont Park Race 8 – Joseph A. Gimma Stakes

This is the ungraded Joseph A. Gimma Stakes, a race for New York-foaled two-year-olds running a distance of seven furlongs for a purse of $100,000.

I’m going with the 8/5 favorite in this race as well—Irish Constitution, with Mannie Franco in the irons. This filly broke her maiden in her first career starts, only to be a bit outclassed in her second start: The Spinaway Stakes (Grade I) at Saratoga in early September. Still, she gamely finished fourth.

The odds aren’t long enough on the two longer-odds entries in this race to make a wager worth the risk.

  • Win: Irish Constitution 8/5

More Racing Tips for Today

Belmont Park may have been a bit stingy with the value bets today, but I found some worthwhile investments at the other two tracks I reviewed for Thursday:
