Bayern Munich vs. Atletico Madrid – Champions League, October 21, 2020
Bayern Munich vs. Atletico Madrid could quite easily be a fixture in the latter stages of this year’s Champions League. But on Wednesday, October 21, the two sides open their accounts on Matchday 1.
Bayern and Atletico are undoubtedly the favorites to qualify from Group A, with Lokomotiv Moscow and Red Bull Salzburg not expected to cause the frontrunners too many problems. But can the defending champions gain the upper hand on the opening day? Or will the Spaniards upset the odds?
I assess the bookies’ odds before sharing my Bayern Munich vs. Atletico Madrid prediction and betting pick.
Bayern Munich vs. Atletico Madrid Odds
It is hardly surprising that 10bet views Bayern Munich (1.50) as the overwhelming home favorite to win this one. The reigning UCL champions will be confident of defending their crown and will be eager to get off to a strong start.
But it is no secret that Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid (5.60) is extremely difficult to beat. With that in mind, the high prices for the draw (4.40) and the away win are bound to attract some interest.
Bayern Munich vs. Atletico Madrid Preview
Bayern only lifted the Champions League trophy less than two months ago, but following a short lay-off, the Germans start the defense of their title with a tricky test against one of Europe’s top teams.
However, it is fair to say that Hansi Flick’s men have picked up where they left off last term. The German giant has won six of their seven games in all competitions so far, netting 17 goals in just four Bundesliga outings.
After crushing Schalke 8-0 on the opening day, Bayern suffered a shock defeat to Hoffenheim. But subsequent victories over Hertha (4-3) and Arminia (4-1) put the club back on track.
Having netted a remarkable 55 goals in 47 appearances last season, including 15 in team Champions League games, Robert Lewandowski already has seven goals in four Bundesliga outings this term. Needless to say, the relentless striker must be monitored closely by Atletico’s defense.

Over in Spain, Atletico has made an unbeaten start to their 2020/21 La Liga campaign. Los Colchoneros hammered Grandad 6-1 before recording goalless draws against Huesca and Villarreal, with a 2-0 victory coming over Celta Vigo in their previous game.
Simeone’s men are known for their outstanding defensive organization, so it is no real surprise that Atletico has only conceded one goal in four outings this term. But at the other end of pitch, new signing Luiz Suarez has been grabbing the headlines.
The experienced Uruguayan already has three goals to his name following his summer move from Barcelona. He notched up two goals and an assist on his debut for the club and already looks at home at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Bayern Munich vs. Atletico Madrid Betting Pick
Bayern Munich to Win1.50
We all know that Atletico is going to be tough to break down. The Spanish side is hugely experienced at this level and knows what it takes to grind out results against the best teams in Europe.
Still, I’m confident that Bayern will come out on top on Wednesday. Since Flick took over, the Bavarians have been almost unstoppable, so I’m expecting Lewandowski and co. to get the job done.
