Bayern Munich vs. Lazio – Champions League, March 17, 2021

| March 17, 2021 7:48 am PDT

Following Bayern Munich’s 4-1 victory in the first leg, Lazio visits Allianz Arena on Wednesday, March 17, needing to produce one of the greatest Champions League comebacks of all time.

The defending UCL champions already have one foot in the quarter-finals, while the Eagles will need to score three unanswered goals to progress into the last eight.

I provide my Bayern Munich vs. Lazio prediction and betting pick below. But first, let’s take a look at the bookmakers’ odds.

Bayern Munich vs. Lazio Odds

Bayern Munich to Win1.32
The Draw5.50
Lazio to Win8.25

As you can see, the top online sports betting sites view Bayern Munich (1.32) as the clear favorite to win on Wednesday, leaving Lazio (8.25) as the rank outsider.

The huge price for the draw (5.50) is bound to attract plenty of interest here, although it is difficult to image the visitors getting anything from this game.

Bayern Munich vs. Lazio Preview

Having won the Champions League last season, Bayern’s title-defending campaign could not have gone much better up to now.

Hansi Flick’s men cruised through the group stage unbeaten, scoring 18 goals across five wins and one draw. After beating Atletico Madrid 4-0, as well as seeing off Lokomotiv Moscow and Red Bull Salzburg, Bayern finished seven points clear at the top of Group A.

Last time out, the Bavarians picked up where they left off in the group stage, with first-half goals from Robert Lewandowski, Jamal Musiala, and Leroy Sane putting the German giant in complete control. Bayern eventually beat Lazio 4-1 in Rome, but it could have been even more embarrassing for the hosts.

Following recent heavy victories over FC Koln (5-1), Borussia Dortmund (4-2), and Werder Bremen (3-1), the German champions now sit four points clear at the summit of the Bundesliga standings.

Flick’s men haven’t had it all their own way this season, yet they still find themselves leading the race for the Bundesliga title – and they are on course to their UCL crown, too!

I can’t help but feel a little bit sorry for Lazio. Despite registering 14 shots in the first leg, five of which were on target, the Eagles were ultimately punished for their wastefulness in front of goal.

Joaquin Correa netted the Italians’ only goal three weeks ago, although his side was already 4-0 down by then. Now, Simone Inzaghi’s men must score at least three goals to stand any chance of reaching the quarter-finals.

Since the first leg, the Rome outfit has suffered two defeats in three Serie A outings. A 2-0 loss to Bologna was followed by a 3-1 loss to Juventus, although Lazio’s mini losing streak was brought to an end at the weekend.

Despite throwing away a two-goal lead, the Eagles managed to fight back and edge out lowly Crotone 3-2 in their previous match.

Worryingly for Lazio, Ciro Immobile has failed to score in each of his last five Serie A appearances. Having netted 13 goals in 16 games before that, it’s fair to say that Inzaghi’s star man is not in form right now.

Bayern Munich vs. Lazio Prediction and Pick

Pick
  • Bayern Munich to Win
    1.32

The price for the Bayern win may seem pretty low here, but I actually don’t think it’s too bad. When you consider the Bavarians’ ruthlessness in front of goal, it is difficult to imagine them losing the second leg.

Lazio has no choice but to go for broke on Wednesday, yet I can see that working against the visiting side. The Eagles will need to attack at Allianz Arena – and that is likely to leave their backline exposed.
