Australia vs. USA – Olympic Basketball, August 5, 2021

| August 4, 2021 4:17 am PDT

The first of the two semi-final matchups in Tokyo should be a dandy. The Americans have regrouped since their opening loss to France and stroll into Thursday’s tilt playing their best ball yet. The Aussies have been brilliant throughout their stay in Japan as they look to maintain an unblemished record.

Something’s got to give as only one of these powerhouse national teams can advance to Saturday’s gold medal game.

Start by taking a look at the odds, my Australia vs. USA betting pick can be found at the bottom of the page.

Under 180-110

I was a bit perplexed to see the top-rated betting sites install such a wide margin. The Boomers not only defeated Gregg Popovich and company on July 12th in Las Vegas – Australia is coming off a 38-point bludgeoning over Argentina on Tuesday.

USA was ultimately able to take care of business versus Spain to advance, but the game was tied at halftime, and the Stars and Stripes surrendered 38 points to an aging Ricky Rubio.

All in all, Brian Goorjian’s squad has to be feeling good about their chances going into this matchup.

Australia vs. USA Preview

As familiar as Patty Mills is with Gregg Popovich’s tendencies, the Australian point guard will be leaned on heavily to continue leading his group. Playing in his third stint at the Summer Games, the long-tenured San Antonio Spur has been tremendous. Mills leads the Boomers averaging 20.8 points and 5.3 assists; he’s shooting a shade under 42% from beyond the arc.

Joe Ingles heads a versatile group of wing players while Nick Kay has supplied efficient productivity off the bench (13.3 ppg on 61.1% shooting). Australia might enter this game as a 12-point underdog on paper, but stats from the Tokyo Olympics allude to this being a fairly even matchup.

Australia vs. USA – By the Numbers in Tokyo
USA Statistic Australia
36 Rebounds 40
27 Assists 26
34.5 Points in the Paint 35.5
42.8 3PT % 40.0
78.5 Points Against 71.3

Of course, the Red, White, and Blue boast a roster that’s overflowing with All-NBA caliber talent.

Kevin Durant is starting to heat up; he’s averaging 26 points on a nifty 64.3% shooting during USA’s two most recent victories. Jayson Tatum has accepted his role off the bench and has been guiding a second unit that’s contributing nearly 47 points per game. Keep in mind, a number of these players, including the trio of Jrue Holiday, Devin Booker, and Khris Middleton, were not part of the lineup when the Aussies beat the United States last month.

If the current version of the American team plays up to their potential, the Boomers are simply overmatched.

Australia vs. USA Betting Pick

I believe the United States comes out on top and earns a berth in the title game. I’m certainly rooting for it to play out that way. However, my Australia vs. USA pick is to back the underdog and the points.

The +520 price tag attached to the Boomers winning outright is certainly alluring – head to BetOnline if your premonition is that team USA will be unseated.

As tempting as that number is, the “12 points” is the figure that truly captivates my attention.

The Aussies are undefeated in Tokyo and coming off their most well-rounded performance yet. Before they arrived, they were extremely impressive during their three-game tune-up in Vegas (beat Argentina, USA, and Nigeria).

Here’s a team that’s won seven games in a row and is gelling, and yet suddenly we’re supposed to think that they’re going to lose by double-digits? And we only have to lay -105? Sign me up!
