Austin FC vs. LA Galaxy – MLS, September 26, 2021

| September 24, 2021 1:37 pm PDT

Two teams in poor form wrap up the weekend’s Major League Soccer action at Q2 Stadium on Sunday, September 26.

The hosts – Austin FC – have lost each of their previous five games and find themselves seven points adrift at the foot of the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the visitors – LA Galaxy – have failed to win any of their last six outings but still sit fourth.

I will be sharing my prediction for Sunday’s showdown later in this post, along with a free betting pick. But first, let’s check out the Austin FC vs. LA Galaxy odds.

Austin FC to Win2.30
The Draw3.70
LA Galaxy to Win2.63

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t slightly surprised by the bookies’ prices for this matchup. Yes, Austin has been cheered on by a raucous home-field crowd throughout the campaign. But the MLS standings don’t lie.

There is no hiding from the fact that last-place Austin trails fourth-place Galaxy by 19 points. In fact, Greg Vanney’s men have accumulated exactly twice as many points as the expansion side this year.

Anyway, that’s what the MLS betting sites make of this matchup. Before we settle on a prediction for Austin FC vs. LA Galaxy, we need to take a closer look at the teams.

Austin Team News and Analysis

It’s safe to say that Austin has endured a testing maiden MLS campaign. I mean, it was always going to be difficult for them to adapt to the league. But 2021 has been super-tough for the newcomers.

When you look at the entire season, Josh Wolff’s men have only managed to win five of their 25 games – drawing four and losing 16. With 25 goals to their name, they are the lowest scorers in the West. They have also conceded 40, meaning they have the third-worst defensive record.

If you consider their recent form, things don’t get any better. The Texans have lost eight of their last nine matches and each of their previous five.

Last weekend, Los Verdes carried a 3-1 lead into halftime against San Jose, only to lose 3-4. That performance – and the final result – sums up their season perfectly. You can witness the madness for yourself below.

To make matters worse for Wolff’s men, they will be without influential captain Alexander Ring on Sunday. The midfielder was sent off in the defeat to the Earthquakes, making Austin’s task even harder this weekend.

Assessing the Galaxy’s Prospects

I think the Galaxy can count themselves lucky to still be sitting fourth in the standings. Despite not winning any of their last six games, they remain in contention for a playoff berth.

Scoring goals hasn’t been an issue for Vanney’s men this year. In fact, they have netted 37 times, with only four teams in the West scoring more. However, at the other end of the field, their struggles have been clear for all to see.

The Californians have conceded 40 goals this year – the same number as Austin. If it weren’t for Javier Hernandez’s goals, the team would be in a very different place.

Having said all that, the Galaxy still possesses more than enough firepower to overcome Austin. Alongside Chicharito, Dejan Joveljic can flourish in attack. Further back, guys like Efrain Alvarez, Sebastian Lletget, and Jonathan dos Santos make up one of the meanest midfielders in the league.

Considering Austin’s woes, this meeting should give the Galaxy the ideal opportunity to return to winning ways and get back on track.

Austin FC vs. LA Galaxy Prediction and Pick

Pick
  • LA Galaxy to Win
    2.63

I’m aware that three of Austin’s five wins in 2021 have come on home soil – and I know the Texans tend to up their game in front of the Q2 faithful. Still, I’m confident the Galaxy will come out on top this weekend.

At the end of the day, Vanney’s men are in fourth place for a reason. Granted, they have endured a tricky period recently. But let’s not forget about all the hard work they put in earlier in the season to get to where they are.

It is difficult to imagine the Galaxy going seven games without a win, isn’t it? That’s why I’m backing the visitors to leave Texas with all three points on Sunday night.
