Austin FC vs. Inter Miami – MLS, Sunday, March 6, 2022

| March 3, 2022 4:44 am PDT

Austin FC kicked off the 2022 Major League Soccer season with a thumping 5-0 victory over FC Cincinnati. Thanks to their superior goal difference, the Texans find themselves atop the MLS standings for the very first time.

It is still early days, of course, but Josh Wolff’s men will be brimming with belief as they prepare to welcome Inter Miami to Q2 Stadium this Sunday, March 6. The Herons played out a goalless draw with Chicago Fire in their first game.

Can Austin secure back-to-back wins this weekend? Or will Phil Neville’s men seal claim all three points? Keep reading to discover my Austin FC vs. Inter Miami prediction and betting pick.

Austin FC vs. Inter Miami Betting Odds

Austin FC to Win1.80
The Draw3.80
Inter Miami to Win4.50

All the top-ranked MLS betting sites view Austin FC (1.80) as the firm favorite to win this one, leaving Inter Miami (4.50) as the clear outsider. Thanks to Austin’s hefty win last weekend, the price for the draw (3.80) is also notably high.

With the home-field advantage on their side, the Texans have the upper hand here. Still, Inter Miami can take confidence from the fact that Austin’s debut season in Major League Soccer did not end well.

It’s time to take a closer look at the teams.

Will Austin FC Secure Back-to-Back Wins?

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Austin’s maiden MLS campaign was a big failure. Wolff’s men ended up finishing 24th out of 27 in the overall standings after scoring the fewest numbers of goals in the entire league.

The Texans lost 21 of their 34 games last season, scraping together nine wins and four draws along the way. Only one team – FC Cincinnati – suffered more defeats in 2021.

Funnily enough, Austin met Cincinnati on the opening weekend of the new campaign. Wolff’s men signaled their intentions for the season ahead by notching a 5-0 thrashing of the lowly Ohio outfit.

Austin carried a 3-0 lead into half-time before adding a further two goals after the break. Paraguayan DP Cecilio Dominguez bagged a brace, with Alexander Ring and Sebastian Driussi completing the scoring. To make matters worse for Cincy, Alex Kann netted an own goal.

Not only did the Austinites enjoy the lion’s share of possession, but they also racked up 19 shots. They will now be confident of inflicting more pain on Inter Miami this weekend.

Can Inter Miami Upset the MLS Odds?

Inter Miami played out a frantic goalless draw with Chicago Fire last time out. Although neither team managed to find the net, both sides created a ton of goalscoring opportunities.

The Herons registered 17 shots, three of which were on target. Meanwhile, Chicago chalked up 16 attempts but also hit the target on only three occasions. It goes without saying that both teams need to work on their finishing.

Inter Miami’s roster is stacked with standout players, namely Gonzalo Higuain. The veteran striker has played for some of the biggest clubs in world soccer but has yet to find his feet in MLS.

The club is also home to former EPL stars such as DeAndre Yedlin and Kieran Gibbs, as well as Blaise Matuidi – who won the World Cup with France in 2018. However, the team has struggled to adapt to life in MLS.

The Floridians won just 12 of their 34 matches last season, recording five draws and 17 losses in the process. If last weekend’s result is anything to go by, they look set to experience another testing campaign.

Austin FC vs. Inter Miami Prediction

I expect Austin to take the game to Inter Miami. With 20,000 fans cheering them on, Wolff’s boys invariably put up a strong fight in front of their home crowd.

The Texans will be full of confidence after thrashing Cincinnati last time out. Fresh from scoring five goals in a single MLS game for the first time ever, they will fancy their chances of dispatching the Herons.

Granted, Inter Miami is not Cincinnati. But if the Austinites pick up where they left off last weekend, they could humiliate Neville’s team on Sunday.

My Austin FC vs. Inter Miami Pick

Pick
  • Austin FC to Win
    1.80

I’m backing Austin to claim all three points when Inter Miami comes to town. Although the Texans managed to notch back-to-back wins on just one occasion last season, they kicked off the new campaign in style.

Before Austin and Inter Miami go head-to-head, there are 12 MLS games taking place on Saturday, March 5. Follow the link below to check out my predictions and picks for Saturday’s MLS matches.
