Austin FC vs. Houston Dynamo MLS Prediction – Tuesday, July 12, 2022
MLS Rivalry Week continues this Tuesday, July 12, with Q2 Stadium hosting an all-Texas showdown between Austin FC and Houston Dynamo.
Austin sits second in the Western Conference – two points shy of LAFC – having suffered just four defeats in 19 outings this year. Can Josh Wolff’s boys extend their winning streak to four games on Tuesday?
Meanwhile, Houston sits eleventh – 15 points behind Austin. Paulo Nagamura’s men have won only one of their previous six league encounters, suffering four losses along the way.
This Austin FC vs. Houston Dynamo betting preview contains odds, head-to-head stats, team news and analysis, my prediction, and a free pick. Let’s start with the bookies’ prices and work our way through the rest.
Austin FC vs. Houston Dynamo Odds
Here are the latest odds for Austin FC vs. Houston Dynamo, courtesy of BetOnline.
As you can see, Austin (-125) is the out-and-out favorite to win this one. The Verde and Black is on an eye-catching run at the moment – and the bookmakers have acted reacted accordingly.
Houston (+325) heads into Tuesday’s all-Texas clash as the rank outsider, having endured a below-par string of results. Given that El Naranja trails Austin by 15 points, the price for the draw (+310) is also sizeable here.
Before we take a closer look at both sides, we need to check out the head-to-head record.
Austin FC vs. Houston Dynamo Head-to-Head
- Austin FC Wins: 3
- Houston Dynamo Wins: 1
- Draws: 0
Austin and Houston have faced each other four times since Austin entered Major League Soccer in 2021. Unfortunately for the Dynamo, they have only managed to claim one victory over their state rivals.
Wolff’s boys won the first meeting 3-2 before registering a 2-1 victory toward the end of last season. In their previous meeting back in April, Austin claimed another 2-1 win over Houston – this time at PNC Stadium.

Austin FC Team News and Analysis
Austin heads into Tuesday’s clash on the back of a hugely impressive 3-0 road victory against Atlanta United. Felipe Martins and Ethan Finlay gave their side a 2-0 lead inside 17 minutes before Sebastian Driussi completed the rout after the break.
Thanks to recent victories over Charlotte FC (1-0) and Colorado Rapids (3-2), the Verde and Black is on a three-game winning streak. When you look at the bigger picture, they have won nine of their previous 14 MLS outings.
In addition to sitting second in the West, Wolff’s boys are the joint-top scorers in the entire league. Having netted 38 goals in 19 games, they average two goals per game in 2022.
- Austin FC – 38
- Los Angeles FC – 38
- New York City – 37
- CF Montreal – 33
- Portland Timbers – 32
Following his strike last weekend, Driussi finds himself joint-second on the Golden Boot leaderboard. The Argentine DP has bagged 11 goals and four assists this season, highlighting his importance to the team.
Meanwhile, Maxi Urruti (6 goals, 1 assist), Ethan Finlay (4 goals, 4 assists), and Diego Fagundez (3 goals, 8 assists) have starred throughout the campaign.
It is also worth noting that Austin boasts the second-best defensive record in the West. Ultimately, Wolff’s men are seriously strong at both ends of the field – and that is why they find themselves in such a strong position.
Houston Dynamo Team News and Analysis
Houston made an excellent start to the season. Not only did they lose just one of their opening seven games, but they also picked up three wins in the process.
Since then, however, the Dynamo has struggled. Nagamura’s men have only managed to win three of their previous 13 outings, suffering eight defeats along the way.
Although El Naranja stopped the rot with a 2-2 draw against FC Dallas last weekend, they required a 101st-minute equalizer from Teenage Hadebe to snatch a point. They can’t afford to leave it that late on Tuesday.
The Dynamo is one of just five Western Conference teams with a negative goal difference. Only three sides have scored fewer goals than Nagamura’s men in 2022, so I can see them struggling to break down Austin’s sturdy backline.
Austin FC vs. Houston Dynamo Prediction
There is no hiding the fact that Austin and Houston are worlds apart right now. Indeed, the 15-point gulf between the two Texas rivals tells you everything you need to know about the current situation.
Wolff’s boys netted ten goals across their past five games, securing four wins and one draw in the process. By contrast, the Dynamo conceded 11 in their previous six – suffering four defeats along the way.
At the end of the day, I expect in-form Austin to make light work of struggling Houston. With Driussi and Fagundez leading the way, the Verde and Black should ease past the Dynamo without any real problems.
My Austin FC vs. Houston Dynamo Pick
Granted, -125 is not the most attractive price in the world. But given the gulf between Austin and Houston at the moment, backing Wolff’s men to dispatch their visitors is a no-brainer.
Let’s not forget that Austin has won three of the four MLS clashes between these two sides. I’m backing the second-year side to claim the Lone Star State bragging rights once again.
