Atlanta United vs. New York Red Bulls – MLS, October 10, 2020

| October 8, 2020 3:41 am PDT

We are now 16 games into the 2020 MLS season, and there are only two points separating Atlanta United and New York Red Bulls. The Five Stripes currently trail the Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference, although that could change when the two sides clash on Saturday, October 10.

Atlanta will be aiming to extend their two-game unbeaten streak, while the New York club heads into the weekend on the back of two straight defeats.

Who will come out on top at Mercedes-Benz Stadium? Keep reading to see my Atlanta United vs. New York Red Bulls prediction and betting pick.

Atlanta United vs. New York Red Bulls Odds

Atlanta United to Win 2.45
The Draw 3.30
New York Red Bulls to Win 2.75

The top online soccer betting sites can hardly split these two. Atlanta (2.45) is the marginal favorite to win on Saturday, although the Red Bulls (2.75) aren’t far behind.

Given the teams are so evenly matched at the moment, the price for the draw (3.30) is relatively low. The draw odds are usually far higher for MLS matchups, so backing the winner is probably the way to go here.

Atlanta United vs. New York Red Bulls Preview

Atlanta is enduring a below-par season. We all know that. But over the past couple of weeks, it has started to feel like the Five Stripes are getting back to their best. Of course, there is still a long way to go. But the recent signs have been a lot more promising.

The Georgia club ended a six-game winless run by beating FC Dallas at the end of September but fell to Chicago Fire soon after. However, following a 4-0 thrashing of DC United last weekend, Atlanta managed to hold high-flying Orlando City to a goalless draw on Wednesday.

Stephen Glass’ men find themselves seven points off the bottom of the Eastern Conference. But more importantly, they are now only four points shy of the top six. Three clean sheets in four games have helped the Five Stripes move up the standings, but they must start scoring more goals.

On the flip side, back-to-back 4-1 wins at the end of September saw the Red Bulls climb up the ladder. But the New York club now heads to Mercedes-Benz Stadium having lost each of their previous two outings. A 3-1 loss to Orlando and a 2-1 defeat to Inter Miami have quickly crushed the team’s optimism.

But there is hope. With Gerhard Struber set to take charge of the Red Bulls following his departure from England Championship side Barnsley, the New York club will be confident of getting out of their slump and securing a play-off spot.

Due to the health crisis and visa issues, the new head coach won’t be on the touchline for a few weeks. However, the players will still be eager to impress their new boss. With a heightened competition for places, the Red Bulls’ performance level could rise.

Atlanta United vs. New York Red Bulls Pick

  • New York Red Bulls to Win

It is no secret that both these teams have experienced tough campaigns up to now. Still, the Red Bulls have undoubtedly been the more consistent side. Atlanta has stuttered throughout 2020 and is yet to go three straight games unbeaten this term.

I believe the arrival of a new head coach will galvanize the New York club. Struber will almost certainly give the Red Bulls a much-needed kick up the backside!
