Atlanta United vs. FC Cincinnati – MLS, November 1, 2020
The bottom two in the Eastern Conference go head-to-head on Sunday, November 1, as Atlanta United hosts FC Cincinnati at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The Five Stripes have failed to win any of their last six outings and were crushed 4-1 by Orlando City in midweek. Meanwhile, Cincinnati’s losing streak was extended to three games by Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday.
After assessing the bookies’ odds, I share my Atlanta United vs. FC Cincinnati prediction and betting pick.
Atlanta United vs. FC Cincinnati Odds
Considering that Atlanta (1.53) only sits three points ahead of Cincinnati (6.50) in the table, the odds gap is surprisingly large for this matchup.
There is no denying that Atlanta boasts a far stronger squad than Cincinnati, yet both teams have been dreadful throughout 2020. The draw (3.60) could be the way to go here.
Atlanta United vs. FC Cincinnati Preview
Following narrow defeats to Toronto FC and DC United, Atlanta was completely destroyed by Orlando last time out. Erick Torres grabbed a late consolation goal, but the Lions were ultimately far too strong for the Georgia outfit.
Atlanta finished second in the Eastern Conference last year, but the team could easily miss out on the playoffs altogether this time around. And with just five wins from 21 games this season, Stephen Glass’ men have nobody to blame but themselves.
The Five Stripes’ backline has given the team a minuscule chance of qualifying for the playoffs. Indeed, Atlanta boasts the best defensive record in the bottom six. But there is no hiding from the fact that only one team has scored fewer goals than Atlanta in the East in 2020.
Fortunately for Atlanta, Cincinnati is the lowest scorer in the division.
Having netted just 11 goals in 21 outings, it is hardly surprising Jaap Stam’s men find themselves rock bottom of the table. Cincinnati fired their thirteenth blank of the season in midweek as Sporting KC secured an easy win at Nippert Stadium.
The Orange & Blue claimed a shock victory over Ohio rivals Columbus Crew a fortnight ago, but that is their only win in their last nine games. Cincinnati managed to hold high-flying Philadelphia Union to a goalless draw last month, proving that the team is capable of causing the occasional upset.
Only seven players have scored a goal for Stam’s side this year, while only three have netted more than once. Top scorer Yuya Kubo has just three goals to his name, but he has only made one substitute appearance in the past three outings.
Needless to say, Cincinnati’s forward line isn’t going to cause Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan too many problems on Sunday.
Atlanta United vs. FC Cincinnati Betting Pick
Given that Atlanta has performed so poorly this year, I don’t think the odds for the home victory offer much value here. The online sports betting sites view the Georgia club as the clear favorite to win this one, but I’m going with the draw.
Stam’s men may be bottom of the table, but they have ground out a number of draws against tough opponents this year. The Five Stripes will be desperate to avoid defeat on Sunday, so I can Cincinnati picking up a point.
