Atlanta United vs. DC United – MLS, October 24, 2020

| October 21, 2020 3:46 am PDT

Atlanta United has failed to win any of their previous four games, with their last victory coming against DC United at the beginning of the month. Funnily enough, the Five Stripes face DC again on Saturday, October 24, this time at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

It’s fair to say that both these teams have endured a year to forget. The Black & Red currently sits bottom of the Eastern Conference with just three wins from 19 games, although Atlanta is only four points better off.

Read on to see my Atlanta United vs. DC United prediction and betting pick.

Atlanta United vs. DC United Odds

Atlanta United to Win 1.65
The Draw 3.90
DC United to Win 4.50

Atlanta (1.65) is the clear home favorite of the top online sportsbooks to win on Saturday, and it’s difficult to argue with that viewpoint. While the Georgia club has been poor this season, DC (4.50) has been nothing short of dreadful.

However, the Black & Red has shown glimpses of improvement in recent games, so the draw (3.90) is definitely a viable option.

Atlanta United vs. DC United Preview

Atlanta has just four regular-season games remaining to gather enough points to sneak into a play-off spot. But judging by the team’s recent results, finishing outside of the top ten in the Eastern Conference is a real possibility for the 2018 MLS Cup champions.

With just five wins to their name this season, it could be argued that the Georgia club doesn’t deserve a shot at the play-offs. In fact, the Five Stripes are yet to seal back-to-back victories this year, so it’s difficult to imagine them getting anywhere near the trophy.

After crushing DC 4-0 three weeks ago, Atlanta has only managed to claim two points from a possible 12. Draws with Orlando City and Inter Miami have kept the club afloat, although defeats to New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC prove that Atlanta is nowhere near the top sides in the country.

Just three teams in the East have scored fewer goals than Stephen Glass’ men in 2020. The Five Stripes boast a solid defensive record, but they can’t rely solely on their backline to reach the play-offs.

Long-standing DC leader Ben Olsen was finally sacked following a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of New York City earlier in the month. Deciding whether to part ways with Olsen was always going to be a difficult decision for the Black & Red hierarchy, although the sacking has brought about an upturn in form.

Interim head coach Chad Aston oversaw a defeat to Chicago Fire first up, but a draw with Philadelphia Union and a win over FC Cincinnati soon followed. Sunday’s victory ended a nine-game winless run for DC, with the team scoring two goals in back-to-back games for the first time since the MLS is Back Tournament.

Donovan Pines has been the unlikely hero of late. The center-back netted in the draw with Philly and the victory over Cincinnati, but he will be hoping that his attacking team-mates step up to the mark soon.

Atlanta United vs. DC United Betting Pick

  • The Draw

This is a tough game to call. While it is important to remember that Atlanta hammered DC 4-0 less than a month ago, it is also worth considering how much the Black & Red has improved in recent weeks.

The Five Stripes have only managed to win one of their previous six games, making them one of the most inconsistent teams in the division. I can’t see either team winning this one, so the draw makes sense here.
