Prediction for Athletics vs. Angels – Saturday, May 21st, 2022
It’ll be an AL West showdown on Saturday night as the Oakland Athletics take on the Los Angeles Angels. This will be their second series of 2022, with the Angels winning three of four games.
Los Angeles has been the better team, but they head into Friday on a three-game losing streak. Will that end before Saturday night’s matchup, or will Oakland score the victory?
The Angels could use a bounce-back performance after their recent skid. Let’s see how BetOnline views Saturday’s matchup.
Athletics vs. Angels Odds for May 21st

Typically, I’d talk about each team’s betting trends separately, but there’s no difference. The Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels are each 20-20 against the spread. Neither team has looked great lately, so something will have to give.
Unfortunately, both teams are dealing with multiple injuries. Oakland has been without Stephen Vogt for a month, while Stephen Piscotty has missed two weeks with a calf strain. The Angels could be without Matt Duffy after a collision left him with a face injury on Tuesday.
Lately, we haven’t seen either team playing up to their potential. Which team will seize the opportunity and pick up a division victory? Here is my game preview for Saturday’s matchup.
Athletics vs. Angels Preview
The Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels will have their second series in the last week. Los Angeles’ pitching staff dominated Oakland, allowing five runs in the four-game series. Offense has been the issue for Oakland, as they’ve scored the fourth-fewest runs.
Do you know whose offense hasn’t had an issue? The Angels! Their 196 runs are second in the majors. Their pitching has looked good, but they let them down against the Texas Rangers.
- Game 1: 7 runs
- Game 2: 10 runs
- Game 3: 6 runs
The Angeles looked like one of the best teams, but a three-game sweep at the hands of the Rangers doesn’t exude confidence. Still, they’re only 1.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West.
Los Angeles was one of my best bets to make the 2022 MLB playoffs because of their MVPs in the lineup. Both players have looked good, but Mike Trout is on pace for another AL MVP.
Trout is hitting .320 with 11 home runs and 23 RBIs. He also ranks top-five in OBP, OPS, and WAR. The Athletics will have their hands full against Trout and the Angels lineup.
The pitching matchup for Saturday night’s game will feature Oakland starter Frankie Montas against Los Angeles pitcher Michael Lorenzen. Montas had an excellent performance in his last start against Los Angeles.
- 6.0 innings
- 5 hits
- 2 runs
- 1 walk
- 12 strikeouts
Unfortunately, Oakland’s offense didn’t give him run support as they lost 4-1. Montas and Lorenzen’s numbers have been similar, but Montas is among the league leaders with 53 strikeouts.
Montas has the potential to shut down the Angels’ offense, but will the Athletics give him run support? That should play a significant factor in the outcome of Saturday’s game.
Athletics vs. Angels Same Game Parlay
- Taylor Ward to Record a Hit (-185)
- Andrew Velazquez to Record a Hit (-135)
- Seth Brown to Record an RBI (+155)
My same game parlay for the Oakland Athletics vs. Los Angeles Angels doesn’t feature the star players. Hopefully, taking a value approach won’t come back to haunt us. The parlay will give you (+577) odds.
Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani receive the headlines in the Angels’ offense, but Taylor Ward might be their best player in 2022. Ward leads the majors with a .370 batting average and 1.194 OPS.
Ward has kept up his hot streak, recording a hit in ten straight games. He is 7-16 against the Athletics this season and 4-8 against Frankie Montas. There’s no reason to go against him in this matchup. Honestly, recording 2+ hits might be worth a play.
Andrew Velazquez’s numbers are nowhere near Ward’s, but he has looked strong lately. Check out his numbers in his last 11 games.
- .282 batting average
- 1 home run
- 4 RBIs
- 5 runs
He has recorded a hit in nine of his last 11 games, raising his batting average from .131 to .190. Velazquez has a hit in all five of his matchups against Oakland this season. He should keep that up as Los Angeles aims to end their losing streak.
Oakland’s offense hasn’t had much to celebrate, but Seth Brown is starting to hit his stride. Brown was hitting .158 following Sunday’s loss to the Angels. Since then, he’s 7-16 with a home run and four RBIs.
Brown had a big performance Friday night, hitting the go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning. That gave him three straight games with an RBI. Can he extend that streak in Saturday night’s game? It’d be significant for our same game parlay.
Athletics vs. Angels Pick
Los Angeles Angels to Win-150
The Los Angeles Angels head into Saturday’s matchup as the better team. They’re coming off a disappointing sweep against the Texas Rangers. However, I like their chances to bounce back.
I believe the Oakland Athletics have the better starter, but their offense isn’t on the same level as Los Angeles. Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, and Taylor Ward should lead the Angels to an AL West victory.
