Atalanta vs. Liverpool – Champions League, November 3, 2020

| November 2, 2020 8:39 am PDT

The Champions League continues this week, with the top two teams in Group D going head-to-head. Atalanta hosts Liverpool at the Gewiss Stadium on Tuesday, November 3, and it’s destined to be a thriller!

This matchup brings together two of the most exciting teams in Europe. Free-scoring Atalanta reached the UCL quarter-finals last term, while the Reds clinched the EPL title in style.

I assess the bookies’ odds for Atalanta vs. Liverpool before sharing my prediction and betting pick.

Atalanta vs. Liverpool Odds

Atalanta to Win 3.15
The Draw 3.95
Liverpool to Win 2.10

Liverpool (2.10) is the bookies’ favorite to win this one. Still, the high odds for the away victory suggest the Reds won’t have it all their own way on Tuesday.

The bookmakers clearly think that Atalanta (3.15) is capable of causing an upset, especially with Liverpool missing a number of key players through injury.

Atalanta vs. Liverpool Preview

It seems as though Gian Piero Gasperini’s men have picked up where they left off last season, starting the 2020/21 campaign with a series of high-scoring encounters. In fact, each of Atlanta’s opening seven games produced over 3.5 goals, with Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Crotone their lowest-scoring clash this term.

Following Duvan Zapata’s double in a 2-2 draw with Ajax last week, Luis Muriel netted a brace on Saturday. Both players also scored in Atalanta’s 4-0 thrashing of Midtjylland on Matchday 1, underlining the team’s strength in attack.

Gasperini’s men are the second-highest scorers in Serie A and find themselves fourth in the Italian top flight. However, only five teams in the division have conceded more goals than La Dea, and they are all in the bottom half of the table.

Atalanta has won four and lost two of their six domestic games this season, and having taken four points from a possible six in the Champions League, the Italians will fancy their chances of upsetting Liverpool.

Liverpool’s injury list was lengthened last week as Fabinho became the latest Reds casualty. The Brazilian was forced off in the first half against Midtjylland, although the English side still managed to claim a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Fabinho joins Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the sidelines, while Naby Keita and Kostas Tsimikas are also unlikely to feature on Tuesday. On a brighter note, Thiago Alcantara looks set to return following a knee injury sustained in the Merseyside derby.

Despite all their absentees, Liverpool has still been picking up results. Indeed, the Reds are on a five-game unbeaten streak in all competitions and have won their last four outings.

After seeing off Ajax on Matchday 1, Klopp’s men edged Sheffield United before beating Midtjylland. Last time out, Liverpool ground out another victory, with Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota both scoring for the second consecutive game.

Atalanta vs. Liverpool Pick

Pick
  • Atalanta to Win
    3.15

Liverpool has a deep squad, so Klopp has been able to deal with the influx of injuries recently. Having said that, the Reds have not had to face a team of Atalanta’s quality since losing van Dijk.

Gasperini’s men are averaging over three goals per game this season, so I’d be amazed if they don’t find a way through Liverpool’s weakened backline. Of course, the EPL champions will put up a good fight on Tuesday. But I can see Atalanta outscoring Liverpool.
