Aston Villa vs. Liverpool – EPL, October 4, 2020

| October 1, 2020 4:44 pm PDT

Two clubs with 100% records come together at Villa Park on Sunday and even though the home side has only played two games so far, there is definitely a renewed feeling of confidence around the place.

Liverpool already looks like it will take some beating once again this season – but the title race should be more of a close-run thing. Can Villa cause the first shock result of the season for Jurgen Klopp’s side here?

Aston Villa may not have lost a game so far this season but the bookies don’t see that form continuing over the weekend. Liverpool is the odds on favorite to keep its own unbeaten form going and, with the way it dismissed the challenge of Arsenal on Monday, it is difficult to argue with that assessment.

Aston Villa vs. Liverpool Match Preview

The good news for Aston Villa fans is that their club looks like it is more prepared this season. It only just escaped relegation in its first year back in the top flight but there have been a number of signings that suggest that manager Dean Smith might not be so anxious towards the end of this campaign.

The latest of those is Ross Barkley coming in from Chelsea on a season-long loan. If he can regain his very best form then the Villa midfield will look very good, with John McGinn and Jack Grealish already putting in some very impressive performances in the first two games of the season.

But Villa will have to be on the top of its game to get anywhere near taking a point or three from Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp’s team’s possession play against Arsenal on Monday may not have been the most exciting to watch but it completely dominated its opponents and came back from a goal down to end up winning comfortably.

Although Roberto Firmino doesn’t look at his best quite yet, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane have picked up where they left off last season and are ably backed up by a squad full of players that look very confident on the ball and of their chances of repeating as Premier League champions.

Aston Villa vs. Liverpool Pick

  • Liverpool to Win

This could be a much closer game than many – including the bookies – will be expecting. But even with Aston Villa’s step up this season, there is still a huge gap in class between the two sides. Liverpool has so many world-class midfielders now that it doesn’t matter who is substituted or injured – it will always stand a very good chance of controlling games and ending up with three more points.
