Aston Villa vs. Burnley – EPL, December 17, 2020
Aston Villa continues to be one of the most improved EPL sides of the season so far and manager Dean Smith will be expecting another three points from this home game against Burnley.
But Sean Dyche’s side went to the Emirates on Sunday and came away with a surprise victory of its own. Could Burnley make it two from two?
Aston Villa vs. Burnley Odds
Burnley might have only lost one game in its last five in the Premier League but the bookmakers cannot see the Turf Moor club keeping up its unbeaten run on Thursday.
Villa has been impressive this season but does find itself in mid-table. Even so, the odds for the home win are probably the most interesting here.
Aston Villa vs. Burnley Match Preview
Villa completely dominated the first half of the West Midlands derby with Wolves at the weekend. Although the home side came back into it in the second period, it would probably have been a little unfair if Dean Smith’s side had not ended up winning all three points.
It did take a stoppage time penalty to confirm the victory, however, and Villa won’t want to leave it so late to beat Burnley on Thursday. Matty Cash and Douglas Luiz will miss this one after picking up too many yellow cards this season, but Ross Barkley may be able to return after being ruled out through injury for the last two. He could make a real difference and take some of the creative pressure off of Jack Grealish.
If those two are both starting on Thursday, Sean Dyche will need to work out a way of stopping that creativity while keeping his own players on the pitch. It was Arsenal that was reduced to ten men in Burnley’s last game and the Clarets took full advantage of the numerical superiority to win the game.
It took an own goal from Aubameyang to win the points but Burnley won’t care as it was just their second victory of the season. It dragged the club out of the bottom three, but there is a pretty good chance that it will continue to battle at this end of the table for the majority of the season.
Aston Villa vs. Burnley Pick
Aston Villa to Win-136
Villa will miss Cash and Luiz on Thursday but should still dominate the game against Burnley and end up on the winning side.
Sean Dyche’s men will be quite happy allowing the home team to control the game, hoping that it can carve out the same kind of luck it was gifted by Arsenal. But Villa is a more stable team than the Gunners – and should make possession pay here.
