Argentina vs. Colombia – 2021 Copa America Semifinal

Argentina now just has to beat Colombia to play its part if it is to face Brazil in the final of Copa America 2021. The host nation also needs to beat Peru in the other semifinal for that to happen and set up a mouthwatering finish to the competition.

Colombia will be the underdog here but was able to overcome Uruguay in the quarterfinal after a less than convincing group phase. Read on to find out whether I give La Tricolor a chance on Tuesday – and for my Argentina vs. Colombia betting pick.

BetOnline makes Argentina the odds on favorite to reach the 2021 Copa America final and Colombia will need to do very well to stop Lionel Messi and company winning in Brasilia on Tuesday.

Argentina cruised through its group stage and still finished top, only dropping points in the opening game against Chile. Colombia has struggled to get this far and I’m not sure that it will have enough – without star player James Rodriguez  – to overcome these odds.

Messi has never tasted glory with his national side and now has to beat Colombia – and probably Brazil – to lift a trophy in the colors of the Albiceleste. He was on the scoresheet once again in the 3-0 win over Ecuador in the quarterfinal, but the scoreline flatters Argentina a little.

Argentina is now unbeaten in 18 games though – and will fancy its chances of overcoming a Colombia side that has looked very patchy so far. Lionel Scaloni’s defense is the weak link in this Argentina team but has only conceded two goals all tournament and has the likes of Messi, Martinez and Di Maria to get them out of any hole.

The top three in the Zona Norte make up the majority of the semifinalists at this year’s Copa America, but Colombia has looked by far the least impressive. After winning just one of its four group games, Reinaldo Rueda’s side battled with little invention to take Uruguay to penalties in their quarterfinal tie. David Ospina ended up the hero of the shootout, saving two spot kicks to ensure victory.

Although the game was low on excitement, Colombia will feel as though it did well to neutralize the threat of Suarez and Cavani and still win through even though it was missing Cuadrado, who was suspended after picking up two yellow cards in the group phase.

Cuadrado returns for this one and will add another creative aspect to Colombia’s attacking play. He may even be able to get the best out of Zapata and Morelos, neither of whom have scored at this tournament. But with Messi in fine form, it is probably the performance of the Colombian defense that decides this encounter.

I think Colombia has done very well to reach this point after a poor group phase where it was unable to even beat Venezuela or Peru. The attritional battle with Uruguay in the quarterfinal was not high on excitement and I feel as though it will need to nullify Argentina as well to get anything from this game.

Argentina has hardly reached top gear throughout this tournament itself, but has still won all but one game. There will be a danger of looking past this game to a possible final against Brazil – but its top players have been playing much better than Colombia’s stars so far. I fully believe that Lionel Messi will have the chance to win a trophy in the final at the weekend.
