Adelaide United vs. Western Sydney Wanderers – A-League, June 3, 2021

| June 2, 2021 10:40 am PDT

It’s safe to say Adelaide is stumbling across the finish line. With just one regular-season match remaining, the South Australians must win to book their spot A-League finals.

The Wanderers kept their faint top-six hopes alive with a 2-0 victory over Brisbane last weekend. However, they will need a mathematical miracle to finish inside the playoff spots.

Fifth-place Adelaide currently sits four points ahead of eighth-place Western Sydney. Can the Wanderers upset the A-League odds when they visit Coopers Stadium on Thursday, June 3?

In this Adelaide United vs. Western Sydney Wanderers betting preview, I assess the odds, analyze the teams, and give my prediction and pick for Thursday’s showdown.

Adelaide vs. Wanderers Betting Odds

Adelaide United to Win1.95
The Draw3.85
Western Sydney Wanderers to Win3.45

All the best online sportsbooks view Adelaide as the favorite to claim all three points on Thursday, leaving Western Sydney as the clear outsider.

But when you consider the Reds’ recent slump, I think there is definitely some value to be found in the odds for the draw and the away win here.

Adelaide Team News and Analysis

When Carl Veart’s men secured six straight wins a couple of months ago, everyone thought they would qualify for the finals with ease. But with one match left to play, they could yet miss out on a top-six finish.

Following the six-game winning streak, the Reds have only managed to win three of their previous 12 outings – recording four draws and five defeats in the process.

To make matters worse, they have only been able to secure two wins in their last nine matches, with three losses coming in their previous five.

Worryingly, Adelaide has been conceding far too many goals of late. Having suffered a 4-1 defeat to both Melbourne City and Sydney FC recently, the Reds’ goal difference has slipped to –2.

Veart’s side is now the only team in the top nine with a negative goal difference.

With the likes of Brisbane and Wellington hot on their heels, the South Australians can’t afford to slip up on Thursday.

Assessing Western Sydney’s Chances

Granted, the Wanderers’ chances of claiming a top-six berth are now extremely slim. But they kept their dream alive with an impressive victory over the Roar last weekend.

Bernie Ibini gave his side the lead midway through the first half before Bruce Kamau completed the scoring late on. Kamau has now bagged seven goals in his last ten appearances, along with two assists.

Looking at the bigger picture – the Wanderers have lost three of their last four games, as well as five of their previous eight. However, while they are still in with a chance of playing finals soccer, they won’t give up.

Having scored 43 goals this season, Carl Robinson’s men are the second-highest scorers in the A-League.

By contrast, they have conceded 41 goals this term, meaning they have the fourth-worst defensive record in the division.

With guys like Kamau and Ibini in good form, WSW should score goals against Adelaide’s poor defense. That said, they are likely to struggle to keep the ball out of their own net.

My Adelaide vs. Wanderers Betting Pick

  • Western Sydney Wanderers to Win

Having assessed both sides, I’m going against the bookies and backing Western Sydney to win this one. Neither team is playing especially well at the moment, but the Wanderers will be full of confidence after last weekend’s win.

It is no secret that Adelaide has taken a turn for the worse over the past couple of months. The Reds’ backline has been leaking far too many goals, so I can see the Wanderers’ in-form forwards taking full advantage of that.
