Adelaide United vs. Wellington Phoenix – A-League, May 7, 2021

| May 6, 2021 2:09 am PDT

Adelaide currently sits fourth on the A-League ladder, while Wellington is down in ninth. But due to the congested nature of the standings, just five points separate the teams.

The Reds welcome the Nix to Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday, May 7, hoping to snap a three-match winless run.

Meanwhile, Ufuk Talay’s men will be aiming to further enhance their top-six aspirations in South Australia, having strung together an impressive five-game unbeaten streak (three wins, two draws).

After assessing the odds and looking at both sides, I will share my Adelaide United vs. Wellington Phoenix prediction and pick.

Adelaide vs. Wellington Betting Odds

Adelaide United to Win2.10
The Draw3.75
Wellington Phoenix to Win3.15

There is no hiding from the fact that Adelaide (2.10) has suffered a slight downturn as of late. Still, the betting sites view the Reds as favorites to claim all three points on Saturday.

Let’s not forget that Wellington (3.15) has taken 11 points from a possible 15 since losing to Melbourne City at the start of April. The Nix are flying at the moment, making the price for the away win look very attractive.

The juicy odds for the draw (3.75) are definitely worth considering, too.

Adelaide vs. Wellington Preview

A six-match winning streak across February and March saw Carl Veart’s men fire themselves into the premiership conversation. But since then, a run of just one win in six games has dented the club’s title hopes.

Granted, the Reds have picked up three draws in their previous six outings, so they are by no means out of premiership contention. That said, Adelaide will probably be happy to settle for a top-six finish right now.

It is worth noting that Adelaide has faced some tough opponents in recent weeks. After losing to the Mariners, Veart’s side not only managed to hold the Wanderers, Sydney FC, and Western United, but also sealed a 3-1 victory over Macarthur.

If the Reds can rediscover the mid-season form that propelled them up the A-League ladder earlier in the year, they should be able to book their spot in the finals series without any issues.

Having bagged 32 goals, the South Australians are the third-highest scorers in the league. Then again, only four teams have conceded more goals than Adelaide this term.

The Nix chalked up a whopping 21 shots against Brisbane last weekend but were ultimately made to pay for their wastefulness. Talay’s men looked destined to beat the Roar, yet they were forced to settle for a point.

Still, the Kiwis did manage to extend their unbeaten streak to five games – and they also kept their first clean sheet in almost two months.

Ben Waine has been at the heart of everything good about Wellington recently. The teenager netted in four straight games last month and had plenty of opportunities to extend his scoring streak to five matches last time out.

With seven goals and five assists to his name this season, Ulises Davila must also be given huge credit for carrying the team at times.

If Waine and Davila can maintain their glittering form on Friday, the Nix will almost certainly give the Reds a run for their money.

My Adelaide vs. Wellington Betting Pick

  • The Draw

In my eyes, the sky-high price for the draw is too good to miss here.

Wellington has already beaten Adelaide 2-1 this season, although the Nix benefited from a stoppage-time penalty on that occasion. The Reds also dominated large spells of the game.

Veart’s men may find themselves five points ahead of Wellington at the moment, but I can’t see the in-form New Zealanders losing on Friday. For that reason, the draw is my Adelaide United vs. Wellington Phoenix prediction.
