Adelaide United vs. Perth Glory – A-League, February 5, 2021

Just one point separates Adelaide United and Perth Glory in the A-League table as they prepare to face off at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday, February 5.

The two sides have already produced an eight-goal thriller this year, with the Glory thrashing the Reds 5-3 in Perth last month.

Despite the result of January’s meeting between the teams, the odds gap for this matchup is notably narrow, with Adelaide (2.40) as the slight favorite and Perth (2.75) as the outsider.

The South Australians have the home-field advantage this time around, although the leading online sportsbooks don’t seem to think that will make too much of a difference.

It’s fair to say that Adelaide has definitely been one of the more unpredictable teams in the A-League this season.

A goalless draw with Western United and a 2-0 victory over Melbourne City saw the Reds kick off the campaign with a couple of positive results, but they were quickly brought back down to earth by Perth’s 5-3 demolition a fortnight ago.

Veart’s men got back on track with a 1-0 win over Melbourne Victory, yet they were completely outclassed by Brisbane Roar last time out, losing 3-1 to the Queenslanders.

With two goals and one assist to his name this term, 16-year-old Mohamed Toure has caught the eye. However, the team can’t expect to rely on a teenager throughout the campaign.

If experienced Socceroo Tomi Juric doesn’t start chipping in on a regular basis, the Reds are likely to struggle to challenge for a postseason berth this year.

Perth’s crazy season just keeps on getting crazier, doesn’t it?

The Glory started with that 5-3 crushing of Adelaide before suffering a 5-4 loss at the hands of Western United. A 2-1 defeat to Victory saw Richard Garcia’s men lose back-to-back games, yet they managed to beat City 3-1 last weekend.

Despite seeing just 36% possession against last season’s runner-up, Perth converted all three of their shots on target. Goals from Daniel Stynes, Dane Ingham, and Nicholas D’Agostino handed the Western Australians their second win of the campaign.

Not only are Garcia’s men the highest scorers in the league by some distance (13), but they also have the worst defensive record (11). With all of their games producing over 2.5 goals so far this term, we are likely to see plenty of action on Friday.

D’Agostino has already scored four goals in four outings this season, while Bruno Fornaroli (3 goals, 2 assists) and Carlo Armiento (3 goals, 2 assists) have also been busy.

If the previous meeting between these two sides is anything to go by, the goal markets will be worth considering. But when it comes to picking a winner, I’m backing the Glory to claim all three points again.

Adelaide has shown glimpses of promise this season, but Perth’s attacking firepower is difficult to ignore. A high-scoring away win is almost certainly on the cards here.
