On Wednesday, May 18, Adelaide United welcomes Melbourne City to Hindmarsh Stadium for the first leg of their semi-final showdown.

The South Australians booked their place in the last four with a 3-1 victory over Central Coast Mariners in the elimination finals. Meanwhile, Patrick Kisnorbo’s boys punched their ticket to the semi-finals after securing back-to-back Premier’s Plates.

Keep reading to discover my Adelaide United vs. Melbourne City prediction and betting pick. First, let’s check out the latest A-League odds.

Adelaide United vs. Melbourne City Odds

Adelaide United to Win3.55
The Draw3.70
Melbourne City to Win1.95

The A-League betting odds at 10Bet make Melbourne City (1.95) the favorite to win the first leg. Despite being the away side, the defending champions will be confident of taking an advantage back home.

The high odds for the Adelaide win (3.55) and the draw (3.70) suggest that Melbourne City should dominate the first leg. Still, Carl Veart’s men will fancy their chances of upsetting the A-League odds at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Before we settle on an Adelaide United vs. Melbourne City prediction and pick, we need to take a closer look at both sides.

Adelaide United Preview – Will the Reds Upset the Odds?

Goals from Craig Goodwin, Kusini Yengi, and Bernardo Oliveira saw Adelaide claim a dominant 3-1 win against Central Coast in Sunday’s elimination final. Now, they must get past the reigning champs in order to reach the final.

Remarkably, last weekend’s triumph was the Reds’ sixth straight victory. After finishing the regular season with wins over Macarthur (1-0), Sydney FC (3-2), Perth Glory (2-0), Brisbane Roar (2-0), and Western United (2-1), they made light work of the Mariners.

When you look at the bigger picture, the South Australians have won nine of their previous 13 A-League encounters. They appear to be peaking at just the right time.

It is also worth noting that Adelaide finished the regular season with the third-best defensive record in the competition. Only Melbourne Victory and Western United conceded fewer regular-season goals than Veart’s men.

  • Melbourne Victory – 25
  • Western United – 30
  • Adelaide United – 31
  • Melbourne City – 33
  • Central Coast Mariners – 35

The Reds can take confidence from the fact that they have yet to taste defeat against Melbourne City this season. Following back-to-back 2-2 draws earlier in the campaign, Adelaide beat City 2-1 back in February.

Melbourne City Preview – Can the Champions Defend Their Crown?

Fresh from defending their premiership crown, Kisnorbo’s boys will be eager to secure back-to-back championship titles. If their regular-season exploits are anything to go by, they could go all the way once again.

Melbourne City lost just five of their 26 regular-season outings, picking up 14 wins and seven draws along the way. As a result, they finished one point clear of Melbourne Victory atop the A-League ladder.

Better still, the premiers are the top scorers by some distance. They have netted 55 goals in 26 games (2.1 goals per game) – 14 goals more than Adelaide.

Once again, Jamie Maclaren has been the star of the show for City. The 28-year-old recently claimed his third straight Golden Boot after scoring 15 goals in 24 regular-season matches. Can anyone stop Maclaren in the finals?

  • Jamie Maclaren (Melbourne City) – 15
  • Beka Mikeltadze (Newcastle Jets) – 13
  • Jason Cummings (Central Coast Mariners) – 10
  • Nick D’Agostino (Melbourne Victory) – 10
  • Aleksandar Prijovic (Western United) – 9
  • Mathew Leckie (Melbourne City) – 9

But it’s not just Maclaren that Adelaide needs to be worried about. Mathew Leckie (9 goals, 4 assists), Andrew Nabbout (5 goals, 7 assists), Florin Berenguer (5 goals, 4 assists), and Marco Tilio (4 goals, 7 assists) have also starred throughout the campaign.

Kisnorbo’s boys have scored over 2.5 goals in nine of their previous 19 games. Having sealed huge wins over Wellington Phoenix (6-0) and Sydney FC (4-0) last month, they could humiliate Adelaide.

Prediction for Adelaide United vs. Melbourne City

The Reds head into Wednesday’s showdown on a six-game winning streak, so they are destined to give the defending champions a run for their money. But have they got what it takes to beat Melbourne City? I’m not so sure.

When you compare the teams’ regular-season records, all the signs point towards the away win.

City picked up two wins more than Adelaide, while Adelaide suffered two defeats more than City. Let’s not forget that Kisnorbo’s boys also scored 17 goals more than Adelaide during the regular season.

I expect Wednesday’s semi-final to be a close-fought battle between two of the top teams in the A-League. However, I’m confident that free-scoring Melbourne City will come out on top at Hindmarsh Stadium.
