Adelaide Strikers vs. Hobart Hurricanes – Big Bash League, December 13, 2020

The Hurricanes will be looking to build on their opening-day victory over the Sixers when they face the Strikers at Blundstone Arena on Sunday, December 13.

Adelaide is yet to open their BBL 10 account, while Hobart beat the Sixers by 16 runs to kick off their campaign with a win.

The leading online sportsbooks seem to think that Adelaide (1.83) has the upper hand here. But as you can see, the odds gap for this matchup is extremely tight.

With a win already in the bag, the Hurricanes (1.91) head into Sunday’s clash on a high. Could that give Hobart the edge on Sunday?

The Strikers ended up finishing four points ahead of Hobart in the table last season, with the Stars just three points ahead at the top. However, a qualifier defeat to the Thunder saw Adelaide bow out early in the playoffs.

Just like last term, it looks as though Adelaide will be relying on their bowlers to get results in BBL 10. Rashid Khan – the most prolific overseas bowler in Big Bash history – returns for a fourth season, while homegrown stars Peter Siddle and Wes Agar are a major threat.

Between them, Khan (19), Siddle (19), and Agar (17) picked up 45 wickets in the previous campaign. It goes without saying that the trio will be key to the Striker’s success this time around.

Despite generally featuring in the middle order, Jonathan Wells was the fourth-highest run-scorer in BBL 9. If he can get anywhere near last season’s average of 68.28, Adelaide should have enough quality to reach the playoffs, even with Aussie internationals Travis Head and Alex Carey missing a few matches.

After being put in to bat by the Sixers on Thursday, Hobart got off to the worst possible start. Openers Will Jacks and D’Arcy Short both fell for a duck before Colin Ingram came in to steady the ship.

The South African hit an impressive 55, alongside a neat 24 from Peter Handscomb. But there is no denying who the star of the show was. Tim David smashed 58 off just 33 balls to bump up the Hurricanes’ score, with Nathan Ellis hitting two sixes in a useful cameo at the end.

James Faulkner and Riley Meredith each took two wickets, while Ellis and Boland were also on target to cap off a solid opening display from Hobart. Kicking off your campaign with a win is always good, but beating the defending champions in the process is a big bonus.

When Englishman Dawid Malan – the number-one ranked T20 batsman in the world – joins the squad in the coming weeks, the Hurricanes will only get stronger.

I was seriously impressed with Hobart on Thursday. The team produced an efficient performance against the Sixers, so I’m backing the Tasmanians to secure back-to-back victories on Sunday.

I believe the Hurricanes’ recent win gives them the edge over Adelaide. The Strikers are yet to play this season, while Hobart is already in their groove.
