Top Betting Picks for the 2021 Sanderson Farms Championship

| September 27, 2021 1:34 pm PDT

As most of the Ryder Cup players and captains catch up on much-needed R&R, Sergio Garcia and Zach Johnson decided to make the trip to Mississippi. They’re joined by 142 others hoping to make an early-season move up the FedEx Cup standings.

The venue is the Country Club of Jackson – a relatively benign par-72 layout that’s hosted this event every year since 2014.

Let’s get into my best Sanderson Farms Championship picks of the week, starting with my favorite under-the-radar plays.

Two Sleeper Picks for Sanderson Farms Championship in 2021

If you remove Sergio Garcia from the equation, nobody ranked inside the top 175 in the world has won the Sanderson Farms Championship at the Country Club of Jackson. In fact, four of the seven winners at this golf course entered the week ranked outside of the top 300.

Recent Winners at the Country Club of Jackson
Year Winner OWGR Entering the Week
2020 Sergio Garcia 42
2019 Sebastian Munoz 179
2018 Cameron Champ 222
2017 Ryan Armour 311
2016 Cody Gribble 444
2015 Peter Malnati 349
2014 Nick Taylor 564

In other words, don’t be shy about attacking a couple of sleeper picks for the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Scott Stallings (+9000)

As I’ve stated many times in the past, the most obvious indicators for how a golfer will perform are recent form and course history. Taking a peek at these two factors makes it easy to get excited about Scott Stallings this week.

The three-time PGA Tour winner was in contention two weeks ago in Napa, ultimately tying for 6th. Stallings also finished T6 at the 2020 Sanderson Farms Championship, where he gained a whopping 9.428 strokes from tee to green.

Considering Scott’s priced at +7000 at nearly all of the safest betting sites for golf, his +9000 number at MyBookie is screaming with value.

Luke List (+11000)

On the theme of shopping tournament odds, Luke List is hanging out at +8000 in some spots. However, stick to MyBookie, and you can latch on at a juicy +11000.

We know List likes this track; he finished second here in 2016 after sleeping on the 54-hole lead. We also know Luke’s game isn’t far off – he posted back-to-back top-5s in July at the John Deere Classic and Barbasol Championship.

And while the softspoken bomber didn’t contend at the Fortinet Championship (T51), it’s worth noting that List ended that week ranked 8th in SG: Off-the-Tee.

On board with either of these 36-year-old PGA Tour vets?

Sanderson Farms Championship Best Bets

I’ll lean a little younger with my next Sanderson Farms Championship predictions.

Harold Varner III (+3500)

HVIII closed out the 2020-21 campaign on a high note – he finished 11th at THE NORTHERN TRUST and 12th at the BMW Championship.

Following a T16 at the season opener in Napa, it appears that Harold has picked up right where he left off.

While nothing, in particular, stands out about Varner III’s game, it’s the totality of his skillset that makes him a dangerous player. Case in point – Harold finished last season “gaining strokes” in all six of the major strokes-gained categories (off the tee, approach, around the green, putting, tee to green, total).

Aaron Wise (+5000)

I’m expecting big things out of Aaron Wise in the upcoming season. His shortcomings with the putter have been well documented; Aaron ranked 174th in SG: Putting and 184th in putting from inside 10’ this past season.

At the same time, Wise is an elite ball-striker who’s been hard at work shoring up his flat stick. To help pinpoint just how solid the 2018 PGA TOUR ROY is from tee to green, here’s a list of some names Aaron finished ahead of in SG: Tee-to-Green last year.

  • Louis Oosthuizen
  • Abraham Ancer
  • Dustin Johnson
  • Jordan Spieth
  • Sam Burns

Remember, holing putts is a lot streakier than hitting fairways and greens. Hence, I’m penciling Wise in as one of the best Sanderson Farms Championship betting picks.
