Betting Preview for the 2021 F1 Portuguese Grand Prix

| May 1, 2021 5:17 am PDT

If you’re looking to bet on the 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix, I have you covered.

The third race of the new season goes down at The Algarve International Circuit in the beautiful southern town of Portimao this Sunday, May 2. I’ll be looking at the latest odds for the Portuguese Grand Prix, as well as drivers to bet on ahead of the big race.

Following a 23 year hiatus, this Grand Prix was resurrected in 2020. Moved from Estoril to Portimao, Lewis Hamilton crossed the line in last year’s edition. Will Hamilton’s odds to win the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2021 make him the man to back?

Join me as I answer that question and more in this betting preview ahead of Sunday’s event.

Portuguese Grand Prix Betting Odds for 2021

Britain’s Lewis Hamilton and Dutchman Max Verstappen are the joint betting favorites for the 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix.

You would expect both of these drivers to feature heavily in Sunday’s race at Portimao. The bookmakers certainly believe that a duel between the two best drivers on the grid is how the race will pan out, but the question is, are you betting on Hamilton or Verstappen to win?

Of course, another eighteen drivers are also searching for glory. Perhaps there is another driver worth a wager from the pack?

According to the best F1 betting sites online, the next best shots are Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas, and Verstappen’s deputy, Serio Perez. Both come in at an interesting +800.

The drop-off from these two is pretty significant. The closest driver to the front four is Lando Norris at an eyewatering +2800.

If you’re ready to get your bets on, feel free to do so. Otherwise, join me as I make my predictions for who wins the F1 Portuguese Grand Prix in 2021 and more.

2021 Portuguese Grand Prix Predictions and Picks

  • Winner – Lewis Hamilton
  • Pole – Lewis Hamilton
  • Fastest Lap – Lewis Hamilton
  • Podium – Valtteri Bottas
  • Dark Horse – Charles Leclerc

So, my top Portuguese GP betting pick for 2021 is Lewis Hamilton.

We have had just one Portuguese Grand Prix since 1996, and the Mercedes megastar won it. That day, Hamilton move past Michael Schumacher in the all-time wins record for F1 with his 92nd career triumph.

This weekend, Hamilton won’t have as much to celebrate in terms of major milestones. But I believe he will be on top of the podium in Portimao.

Given that we have little data to go by at the Algarve International Circuit, it’s difficult to build a case for anyone but Hamilton and perhaps Bottas owning it this weekend. I’m confident that these two will have the speed in this event, but I am backing Hamilton for the hattrick of Pole and Fastest Lap.

Bottas should make it a Mercedes 1-2 in Portugal, while Verstappen will squeeze in to take the last spot on the podium.

As with last week in Imola, I’m backing Charles Leclerc to be the dark horse once more.

Why Hamilton Wins the 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix

So, that’s my predictions and picks for the Portuguese Grand Prix in the books.

But I’m going to briefly expand on why Lewis Hamilton wins in the Algarve. I mean, it would be rude to just pick Hamilton without providing sound reason and logic.

First, Hamilton is going to hit qualifying like a demon this weekend. A major perfectionist, he will have had the best part of a week to stew on a major error that cost him and Mercedes the race on Lap 31. The Brit lost control of his car and ended up in the gravel before bashing into the barriers at Tosa.

Hamilton will be fired up for this one, especially as it was Verstappen’s pressure that led to that uncharacteristic mistake. The war is on between these two, and Hamilton’s proven understanding of the track at Portimao, plus his years of experience over the former wunderkind, makes for one hell of a race.

The Mercedes legend won’t make the same kind of mistake two weeks running, but he can sure force errors out of Verstappen towards another F1 victory.

That should explain why Lewis Hamilton is my betting pick for the 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix.

More Betting Advice for This Weekend

That’s a wrap for my 2021 F1 Portuguese Grand Prix betting preview.

Sunday’s race should be an awesome one, with the battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen heating up nicely. Portimao could be the stage for one of the races of the season so far, but winning your bets on the event would make for a great Sunday, regardless.
