Predictions and Betting Picks for the 2021 F1 Hungarian Grand Prix

| July 30, 2021 8:28 am PDT

Max Verstappen’s odds to win the Hungarian Grand Prix this Sunday, August 1, makes him a firm favorite.

As I predicted, Lewis Hamilton got the win in the British Grand Prix. It was ugly, controversial, and questionable. But the greats always find a way, and Hamilton did just that at Silverstone.

But this weekend’s race at Hungaroring should be a sterner test. Hamilton’s odds to win the Hungarian GP make him the second favorite. But with the Drivers’ Championship standings looking better — and a record 9th win in Mogyorod a strong possibility — motivation should not be a problem for the defending champ.

I have some predictions and picks for the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix for you to look at today. But before we get there, let’s have a look at what the bookies have to say about things.

Latest Odds for the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix

If you’re looking for the best odds for the Hungarian Grand Prix, you’re going to notice the gap between Hamilton and Verstappen and the rest of the field.

Verstappen is the bookies’ favorite to win in Hungary, with -120 a solid price.

The Red Bull star will be seething, having been was taken out of the British GP at Silverstone on July 18 following a collision with Hamilton. Although the Brit was slapped with a 10-second penalty, he won that race and is still in contention for a record eight world titles as a result.

Red Bull, however, has new evidence that they believe could see the Mercedes icon further penalized.

Be it mind games on the Austrian team’s part or an actual push to see for punishment for Hamilton, this is a crucial race for both men.

But that doesn’t mean that anyone betting on the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2021 should completely overlook the rest of the drivers competing, does it?

Charles Leclerc finished second last week, which is a great sign that Ferrari is beginning to re-emerge from the shadows. But if there is a track that doesn’t suit the SF21, it’s Budapest. The car will struggle with the speed of the top two and where downforce is concerned.

Top Picks for the Hungarian Grand Prix

  • Winner – Max Verstappen -120
  • Pole – Max Verstappen -150
  • Fastest Lap – Sergio Perez +500
  • Podium – Sergio Perez +110
  • Dark Horse – Daniel Ricciardo +1200 (Top-3 Finish)

What a great season it has been so far.

It’s nice to see a bit of competition at the top. The drama that has come from it also adds a little bit of extra spice to proceedings.

But with all things considered, my first betting pick for the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2021 is Verstappen to win.

Although Hamilton has dominated in Budapest over the years, things should fall nicely for Red Bull this Sunday, August 1. With the controversy at Silverstone, the Brit will have to be on his best behavior, especially with so much at stake.

I’ll take Verstappen for the pole and his colleague, Sergio Perez, for the fastest lap. Perez is great value at +500 to end the day with the top time.

I like Perez for the podium at +1100, too.

Daniel Ricciardo, the winner here in 2014, for a top-3 finish is very tempting at +1200. Fifth at Silverstone, the Aussie has been knocking on the door of a podium finish for a while, and I think he’s worth some small change at this price.

Why Verstappen Wins the Hungarian Grand Prix (2021)

From 2007 to 2020, Lewis Hamilton has picked up eight wins in this race.

Thus, it’s difficult to look over for him when wagering on the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix. Anyone fading Hamilton should have their reasons for doing so, as he is the master of this track.

This takes me to my reasons why Verstappen wins in Budapest.

First, the youngster has been the form driver this season. If not for that crash at Silverstone last weekend, we could have seen a statement of intent from the flying Dutchman. But consequences create opportunities, and Verstappen will have plenty of chances to put the agony of that race behind him when he takes to the grid.

Sure, no Red Bull driver has managed to win at the Hungaroring since Daniel Ricciardo in 2014. But Verstappen will change that and break down another barrier towards what could be the defining season of his career.

The pressure is all on Hamilton, and he should have a big race. But not necessarily big enough to beat Verstappen.

After the controversy of last weekend, Hamilton will need to fly straight. Doing so might give that extra edge to his rival.

The marriage of Red Bull’s monstrous car and the downforce-friendly track in Hungary makes this a great chance for Verstappen to set his marker down for the rest of the campaign.

Therefore, my winner’s betting pick for the Hungarian Grand Prix is Max Verstappen.
