Best Bets for the 2021 Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship

| March 23, 2021 12:39 pm PDT

Players who didn’t stamp a ticket for Austin Country Club have another opportunity to earn some FedEx Cup points this week. For the second time in the last month, the PGA Tour is hosting an “opposite field” event while a World Golf Championship event takes place.

Branden Grace was able to get off the schneid at the Puerto Rico Open; let’s lift the hood and dive into the Dominican Republic proceedings.

Before we get Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship predictions, have a quick look at who has won here in the past.

Past Winners In Puntacana

2021 marks the fifth consecutive year that Corales Golf Club has hosted a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. The tournament was part of the Korn Ferry Tour schedule in 2016 and 2017 before being elevated to the big stage in 2018.

Each of the five winners is teeing it up on Thursday.

Year Tour Winner Winning Score
2020 PGA Tour Hudson Swafford -18
2019 PGA Tour Graeme McDowell -18
2018 PGA Tour Brice Garnett -18
2017 Nate Lashley
2016 Dominic Bozzelli -2

Graeme McDowell snapped a four-year winless drought when he triumphed here in 2019. Hudson Swafford arrived at Corales Golf Club in 2020 on the heels of three missed cuts and a T56.

The moral here is anything can happen in Puntacana.

2021 Pick to Win

Most will forget about Troy Merritt when making Puntacana picks. After all, some of the best golf sportsbooks aren’t even listing Troy on their betting sheet – that’s how much respect the bookies are giving the Boise State product.

Merritt has missed the cut in his last three starts and has collected just one top-25 on the season. At first glance, he’s exactly the type of guy you quickly skim over.

On the other hand, Troy only missed out on a weekend tee time by one shot at The Honda Classic after playing wonderfully during the second round. Last Friday at PGA National, Troy gained strokes on the field in all five of the major categories (off the tee, approach, around the green, putting, tee to green).

This is exactly the type of momentum that can be carried into the following week.

Keep in mind, Merritt’s last victory was also at an opposite-field event (2015 Barbasol Championship).

Other Bets to Target

If you want safe Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship picks, Charley Hoffman and Charles Howell III will come to mind. However, you’ll have to search a bit further down the betting sheet to latch onto some serious upside in the prop markets.

With that in mind, I’ll toss out two more Corales predictions.

Peter Uihlein to Finish Top 10

After playing predominately in Europe upon completing a standout career in Stillwater, Peter Uihlein has shifted his attention to capturing success in the States. He’s made three straight cuts on the PGA Tour and finished runner-up last week at the Chitimacha Louisiana Open (Korn Ferry Tour).

Just a few days removed from making 19 birdies and two eagles, Uihlein arrives in the Dominican with many positive vibes. Peter tallied a top-25 here in 2019 and is making his third consecutive start at this event.

Scott Harrington to Finish Top 20

Survived a quadruple-bogey “8” in the second round of the 2020 Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship and still managed to crack the top 15. That was thanks to carding 20 birdies and an eagle.

A T53, last week at the Champion Course, doesn’t jump off the page, but know that Scott opened with 66-67 and was T5 heading into the weekend.
