Top Betting Picks for the 2021 3M Open

| July 20, 2021 9:15 am PDT

Assuming Dustin Johnson doesn’t pull one of his patented “11th-hour withdrawals,” DJ will headline the field this week in Minnesota. Louis Oosthuizen, Patrick Reed, and Tony Finau are also here; everyone knows they’ll have to go low in order to contend for the title on Sunday.

Matthew Wolff shot 21-under-par to edge Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa by a single shot in 2019. Michael Thompson shot 19-under to win by two in 2020.

As for the third iteration of the PGA Tournament in Blaine, here’s a look at my 3M Open predictions.

3M Open Sleepers in 2021

I’ll kick things off with a couple of “outsiders” to put on your radar.

Patrick Rodgers (+6600)

Coming off a top-5 at the Barbasol Championship in which he finished 6th in SG: Off-the-Tee and 3rd in SG: Putting, I couldn’t refrain from tabbing Patrick Rodgers as one of my sleeper picks for the 3M Open.

The last time Patrick shot over par was Sunday at the Travelers Championship – he’s 39-under-par during his 12 rounds since.

Rodgers’ latest performance vaulted him 13 spots in the FedEx Cup standings; he now sits inside the all-important top-125. Look for him to continue on his upward trajectory.

Brandon Hagy (+10000)

While Rodgers stood out at Stanford, Brandon Hagy was down the road from Palo Alto, starring at rival-school Cal. He’s taken a bit longer to come into his own as a professional, but look out for what’s in store.

Standing 5’11”, weighing just 160 pounds, Hagy sports the third-fastest club-head speed on the PGA Tour behind only Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Champ. Here’s a “smoothie” that happened to travel some 400 yards at last year’s Barracuda Championship.

6th at the Rocket Mortgage and 18th at the John Deere Classic in his last two appearances hint that a breakthrough performance could be on the horizon.

Top-20 Finish – Charles Howell III

Perhaps it’s a bit premature to call Charles Howell III an official horse for this course. However, CHIII played in both of the prior editions of the 3M Open and finished 23rd and 3rd, respectively.

Chucky Three Sticks has shot par or better in all eight of his rounds at TPC Twin Cities and owns and 67.38 scoring average at this venue.

While it certainly hasn’t been a banner year for the Oklahoma State product, it’s worth noting that Howell closed with a trio of 67s last time out at the John Deere Classic (T23). Given the favorable price tag, this is one of my top 3M Open betting picks.

Matchup Bet – Charles Howell III (+105) Over Gary Woodland

Here’s your chance to double down on CHIII playing good golf this week in Blaine. In reality, simply earning a tee time on Saturday could be enough to capitalize on this plus-money matchup bet at the 3M Open.

I mentioned Charles coming off three straight 67s and having a great track record at this event.

On the flip side, Gary has never competed at TPC Twin Cities. I’ll let you be the judge of his recent form.

Gary Woodland’s Last Four Starts
Date Tournament Scores Result
7/18 The Open Championship 73-70 MC
7/4 Rocket Mortgage Classic 72-70 MC
6/20 US Open 74-71-73-74 T50
6/6 The Memorial 75-73 MC

Ten straight rounds without breaking 70 – it’s safe to say that Woodland is searching for a rhythm.

3M Open Pick to Win in 2021

Last not but least among my 3M Open picks is a nod to Luke List. After skipping a couple of events to support his ailing young son in ICU, List is back on the road on the heels of his son’s health progressing. It’s amazing to see what happens when a man as talented as Luke can play with a freed-up mind.

Since rejoining life on TOUR at the John Deere Classic, List has produced back-to-back top-5 finishes. He’s 35-under-par across the eight rounds.

Arriving in Minnesota after leading the Barbasol Championship in SG: Tee-to-Green, I was pleased to see the Vanderbilt grad priced at +5000 online.

To my delight, some of the top places to bet on golf like BetUS and MyBookie have List lurking at +5500.

After picking off a W on Sunday with my Memorial Health Championship prediction, let’s see if we can hit an outright winner two weeks in a row.
