  • Max Verstappen wins the United States Grand Prix, ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
  • Verstappen leads the Drivers’ Championship by 12 points with five races remaining.
  • Bookmakers view the 24-year-old as the favorite to clinch his maiden title in 2021.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won a thrilling United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, fending off title rival Lewis Hamilton, who finished second.

The Dutchman started on pole in front of 140,000 spectators in Austin, Texas, but was overtaken by Hamilton heading into turn one.

Following an intense strategic battle between Red Bull and Mercedes, however, Verstappen fought back and managed to cross the finish line just 1.3 seconds ahead of Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton Mercedes +1.333s 19
Sergio Perez Red Bull +42.223s 15

As a result of Verstappen’s triumph in Austin, he now leads Hamilton by 12 points in the World Drivers’ Championship. With only five races left this season, we are set for one of the closest title battles in the history of Formula 1.

Can Verstappen hold on to claim his first-ever World Championship? Or will Hamilton overtake his rival to secure a record eighth title?

Let’s find out how Sunday’s dramatic race has impacted the bookmakers’ odds for the F1 Drivers’ Championship in 2021.

Latest 2021 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship Odds

Max Verstappen1.44
Lewis Hamilton2.75
Valtteri Bottas501.00
Lando Norris2001.00
Sergio Perez2001.00

After the US Grand Prix, all the best online Formula 1 sportsbooks view Verstappen (1.44) as the favorite to win the title. That said, Hamilton (2.75) isn’t far behind.

As the bookies’ odds for the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship suggest, the battle for the title is very much a two-horse race.

Valtteri Bottas (501.00) stands an outside chance of lifting the trophy, while Lando Norris (2001.00) and Sergio Perez (2001.00) are the only other drivers who can mathematically win the title.

Five Races Remaining – Who Wins the Title?

It’s safe to say that Verstappen is in pole position to win the 2021 World Drivers’ Championship (no pun intended!).

Not only has the 24-year-old won three of the last six races, but he has also claimed eight of the previous 11 poles. That is, of course, title-winning form.

Hamilton won three of the opening four races this season before Verstappen fought back. Given that Hamilton has five wins to his name this year, it’s no wonder the standings are so tight.

Driver Team Points
Max Verstappen Red Bull 287.5
Lewis Hamilton Mercedes 275.5
Valtteri Bottas Mercedes 185
Sergio Perez Red Bull 150
Lando Norris McLaren 149

Although Verstappen leads Hamilton by 12 points, there are still five races remaining. With 25 points going to the winner of each race, the title battle is set to go down to the wire.

Having won each of the past four titles – and seven of the previous 13 – Hamilton knows what it takes to overtake Verstappen. The Brit is arguably the greatest F1 driver of all time, meaning you cannot write him off.

Despite managing to secure just three poles all year, Hamilton has claimed five race wins – proving that he doesn’t mind coming from behind to get the job done.

Whatever happens between now and the end of the season, we are destined to see a thrilling finale. Hamilton has run away with the title in recent times, but Verstappen won’t let that happen this year.
