Chiefs Trade Tyreek Hill to Dolphins – 2022 Odds Impact

| March 24, 2022 6:16 am PDT

The wildest offseason in NFL history continued on Wednesday as the Kansas City Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins for five draft picks.

Kansas City’s offense still has Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, but they’ll struggle to replace Hill. He had established himself as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. It’ll be interesting to see if he or Mahomes takes a step back.

Surely, this move will impact the NFL betting market. Let’s talk about the trade and break down the odds for the Chiefs and Dolphins.

Tyreek Hill Trade Details and Contract

There was no indication of a potential Tyreek Hill trade until Wednesday morning. Rumors began to swirl that the Chiefs allowed Hill to seek a trade after not agreeing on a contract extension.

It didn’t take long for the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins to engage in deep trade talks. Both teams had a competitive offer, but Hill preferred to play in Miami. Kansas City pulled the trigger, sending Hill to the Dolphins.

Check out the full trade compensation.

Miami Dolphins

  • Tyreek Hill

Kansas City Chiefs

  • 2022 First Round Pick
  • 2022 Second Round Pick
  • 2022 Fourth Round Pick
  • 2023 Fourth Round Pick
  • 2023 Sixth Round Pick

The trade didn’t mark the end of news surrounding Hill. Miami quickly made him the highest-paid wide receiver in NFL history. Hill signed a four-year, $120 million extension, with $72.7 million guaranteed.

Hill wanted out of Kansas City because they were unwilling to give him a Davante Adams-like contract. The Las Vegas Raiders acquired Adams before signing him to a contract last week.

It should be interesting to see how this trade works out for both teams. Let’s check out the updated odds for Kansas City and Miami.

Kansas City Chiefs 2022 Odds

This offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs have sat back and watched their division rivals make significant upgrades. The Las Vegas Raiders acquired Davante Adams and signed Chandler Jones. The Los Angeles Chargers signed J.C. Jackson and acquired Khalil Mack, while the Denver Broncos traded for Russell Wilson.

Even with those moves, the Chiefs remained the favorite to win the AFC West. Check out their odds before the after the trade.

  Pre-Trade Post-Trade
AFC West +130 +165
AFC +400 +550
Super Bowl +750 +900

We have no idea how the draft picks will pan out for Kansas City, but the trade immediately makes them worse. However, the top NFL betting sites aren’t overreacting to the news.

At the end of the day, the Chiefs still have a top-five quarterback in Patrick Mahomes. Their receiving core is in question, with free-agent signing JuJu Smith-Schuster leading the way. However, they have the best tight end in Travis Kelce.

Kansas City remains the favorite to win the AFC West and only trail the Buffalo Bills in the AFC. Surprisingly, Mahomes MVP odds haven’t changed since our early 2022 NFL MVP odds.

Now let’s see how the trade affected the Miami Dolphins’ odds.

2022 NFL Odds for the Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have been a busy team this offseason. It started with the surprise firing of head coach Brian Flores. Miami replaced Flores with San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.

Before the Tyreek Hill trade, Miami upgraded their offense. Check out their top signings.

  • Cedrick Wilson
  • Chase Edmonds
  • Raheem Mostert
  • Terron Armstead

The Terron Armstead signing was a big move as it gives the Dolphins’ offensive line a cornerstone at left tackle. Armstead was No. 1 on most people’s top available free agents.

Those were great moves, but they only paled in comparison to landing Hill. He gives the Dolphins offense another elite playmaker for Tua Tagovailoa.

Miami’s Super Bowl odds moved from (+5000) to (+3500), while their AFC improved from (+3000) to (+2000). Lastly, their AFC East odds went from (+650) to (+400).

It’ll be tough to make the playoffs in a stacked AFC, but Miami’s big trade boosted their odds. If Tagovailoa can have a breakout season, Miami could challenge the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East.

I can’t imagine this is the last major move we’ll see in the NFL offseason. Our sports news page will update you with any big moves and odds movement.
