Sportsbooks View Lewis Hamilton as 2022 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship Favorite

| December 16, 2021 8:14 am PDT
  • Lewis Hamilton is the betting favorite to win the 2022 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship.
  • Defending champion Max Verstappen is the bookies’ second favorite; George Russell is third.
  • Verstappen beat Hamilton by just eight points in last season’s standings.

On Sunday, December 12, Max Verstappen won his maiden Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship. Just days later, the bookies released their odds for the 2022 season

Despite Verstappen’s heroics, Lewis Hamilton is the favorite to regain the title next year. The seven-time champion pushed Verstappen all the way in 2021 – quite literally!

Following arguably the most dramatic season in the history of the sport, it is difficult to predict what will happen in 2022.

Will Hamilton secure a record eighth title? Can Verstappen triumph again? Or will a different driver add their name to the illustrious list of F1 champions?

Early Odds for the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship (2022)

  • Lewis Hamilton (1.80)
  • Max Verstappen (3.00)
  • George Russell (5.50)
  • Charles Leclerc (17.00)
  • Sergio Perez (26.00)
  • Lando Norris (26.00)
  • Carlos Sainz (26.00)
  • Daniel Ricciardo (34.00)
  • Fernando Alonso (34.00)
  • Esteban Ocon (67.00)
  • Sebastian Vettel (81.00)
  • Lance Stroll (101.00)
  • Guanyu Zhou (201.00)
  • Valtteri Bottas (201.00)
  • Pierre Gasly (201.00)
  • Alex Albon (501.00)
  • Yuki Tsunoda (501.00)
  • Mick Schumacher (501.00)
  • Nicholas Latifi (501.00)
  • Nikita Mazepin (501.00)

Although Verstappen pipped Hamilton to the post last season, it is no surprise that all the leading Formula 1 betting sites view the Brit as the favorite to win the 2022 Championship.

Hamilton is on course to surpass Michael Schumacher and become the first driver to clinch eight F1 titles. It goes without saying that he will be desperate to make that happen next year.

George Russell, Hamilton’s new Mercedes teammate, is also expected to challenge for the top prize next season. The ex-Williams driver replaces Valtteri Bottas, who joins Alfa Romeo.

Verstappen’s Red Bull partner, Sergio Perez, is also in the mix – along with the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.

Why Hamilton Is the Bookmakers’ Favorite

Few would argue that Hamilton is not the Formula 1 GOAT. After all, the 36-year-old holds the records for the most wins (103), pole positions (103), and podium finishes (182) in the sport – among various other accolades.

Having won six of the past eight World Drivers’ Championships, Hamilton is currently tied with the legendary Schumacher on seven titles.

Year Driver
2014 Lewis Hamilton
2015 Lewis Hamilton
2016 Nico Rosberg
2017 Lewis Hamilton
2018 Lewis Hamilton
2019 Lewis Hamilton
2020 Lewis Hamilton
2021 Max Verstappen

Of course, the new season will bring new challenges. But Hamilton has showed time and again that he can overcome whatever is thrown at him.

There has been talk of Hamilton retiring after the disappointing end to last season, but I can’t see that happening. He will surely be focused on beating Schumacher’s record.

Why You Cannot Write Off Verstappen

Although Verstappen’s aggressive – and sometimes dangerous – approach always seems to make the headlines, there is absolutely no denying that he is a phenomenal driver.

At just 24, the Dutchman won ten of the 22 Grand Prix last season. Despite facing constant challenges, he managed to block out the noise and get the job done.

Not only did Verstappen achieve more podium finishes than Hamilton in 2021, but he also led for 652 laps across the season – more than double the number of his rival.

Not that Verstappen knows what it takes to secure the top prize, he will be even tougher to beat next year.
