Sportsbooks to Take a Hit if the San Francisco Giants Win 2021 World Series

| October 11, 2021 12:08 pm PDT

Has there been a bigger surprise team this season than the San Francisco Giants? They opened the season with a 5.7 percent chance to make the playoffs. Now, they enter the playoffs with the best record in baseball.

If you placed a bet on the Giants early, you have the potential to win big. On the other side, the sportsbooks are looking at a big loss.

Let’s check out the 2021 World Series odds and see where the Giants stand.

Latest 2021 World Series Odds

Los Angeles Dodgers+245
Houston Astros+400
Tampa Bay Rays+500
San Francisco Giants+750
Milwaukee Brewers+800
Atlanta Braves+1000
Chicago White Sox+1100
Boston Red Sox+1400

Even with the best record in baseball, the San Francisco Giants sit fourth on this list.

A big reason for that is because they will play the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS. Los Angeles came into the season as World Series favorites and finished just one game behind San Francisco. If the Giants win the series, I imagine their odds will improve drastically.

Now, let’s discuss how the Giants have gone from NL West afterthought to World Series contender.

Looking Back at San Francisco’s Preseason Odds

The San Francisco Giants came into the season with (+10,000) odds to win the World Series.

Their win total opened at 73 but grew to 74.5 by opening day. Even so, they ranked fourth in the NL West, below the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona went on to win a league-worst 52 games.

Coming into this season, there wasn’t much hope for the Giants. They were coming off four straight sub .500 seasons and had the second-oldest roster. Not to mention, two of the best teams in the league were in their division.

For the first two months of the season. San Francisco battled with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres for the top spot in the NL West.

On May 31, the Giants inherited the division lead and had the second-best record in the majors. Despite their success, their 1.2 percent chance to win the World Series ranked 14th.

At the all-star break, the Giants had the best record in baseball. Yet, their Word Series chances still ranked outside the top 10. In late July, their World Series odds stood at (+1,000).

San Francisco lost the division lead on September 1 for the first time since May 31. They had the ninth-best World Series odds.

From thereon, the Giants finished the season 23-6. They went on to clinch the NL West and best record in baseball. Right now, the Giants have the fourth-best odds at (+750). On FanGraphs, they have the lowest percentage to win the World Series.

The Giants had a historic regular season, but none of that matters unless they can finish the job. They’ll have a tough battle with the Dodgers in the NLDS. If they can take them down, I think the sportsbooks are going to sweat even more than they already are.

There’s a reason both teams are included in the top World Series matchups.

Are the Sportsbooks in Trouble?

Well, yes and no. It all depends on what happens in the NLDS. The Los Angeles Dodgers are the best team the San Francisco Giants will face all postseason. If the Giants beat them, then the sportsbooks are in trouble.

This season, the Giants have had success because of their offense.

How will that offense perform against an elite Dodgers rotation that includes Walker Buehler, Julio Urias, and Max Scherzer?

I’d be willing to bet on the Giants, but I wouldn’t bet a ton. Their odds still present value, so no need to blow your life savings to win.
