Big news coming from the 2022 Australian Open is that Daniil Medvedev is the new favorite to win the Men’s Singles tournament. Just a couple of days ago, that wasn’t the case. The Russian was sitting in the #2 place of the top trophy candidates behind the reigning champ Novak Djokovic.

However, Djokovic had his visa canceled by the Australian government, meaning that he’s not going to be able to defend his title. As a result, Medvedev climbed to the very top of the favorites list.

Updated 2022 Australian Open After Djokovic Exit

With Novak Djokovic out of the picture, here’s how the Australian Open winner odds currently stand.

Why Did Novak Djokovic Get Kicked Out?

Despite getting medical exemption from the Australian Tennis Federation, Novak Djokovic got his Australian visa canceled by the federal government.

The story goes that even though unvaccinated players cannot compete at the Australian Open, ATP No.1 was given permission to take part in the tournament based upon the fact that he had a coronavirus infection a few weeks before.

However, the rules of the Australian Tennis Federation aren’t the same as those laid out by the federal government. As per their rules, a previous infection isn’t a valid reason why an unvaccinated person should be granted an entry without the mandatory quarantine, which in the state of Victoria is set to 14 days.

Djokovic did appeal and won the first case. However, the Australian Minister of Immigration Alex Hawke then interfered, canceling Novak’s visa once again.

Djokovic appealed again, but this time, the three-judge panel voted unanimously against his appeal. As a result, Djokovic was refused a stay in Australia and was sent back to his native Serbia on Sunday.

With Djokovic out of the competition, the odds shortened in favor of Daniil Medvedev, the player whom Novak defeated in the final of the last year’s tournament.

Why Is Daniil Medvedev Expected to Win?

After Novak’s exit from the Australian Open, Daniil Medvedev is now the highest-ranked ATP player in the tournament. The 6’6 Russian is currently sitting in the #2 place in the ATP Rankings, with 2,080 points fewer than Djokovic.

However, considering that Djokovic isn’t going to be able to defend the 2,000 Ranking points he earned by winning the last year’s tournament, we could see Medvedev throwing him off the ATP throne. For that to happen, Medvedev needs to win the title in Melbourne.

If he does it, it’s going to be his second Grand Slam title of his career. He won the first one at the last major tournament played in 2021 – the US Open – where we saw him beating Djokovic in the final.
