Smith has since apologized to Rock. He indicated that violence was not the answer, and his reaction was purely emotional. 

Uncle Phil would not have been happy.

Although the Smith slap on Rock did appear to be scripted, the presenter appeared to be shaken. It wasn’t a punch, of course. He wasn’t…rocked. Heh. But why did the security not intervene? Even though Rock refused to press charges, why wasn’t Smith arrested for assault?

Still, his reaction suggested that he was not expecting to be challenged to a duel in front of millions of viewers.

Especially by someone who played Muhammad Ali in a movie.
