Phil Nevin Leads the List of Candidates to Be Angels Next Manager

| June 9, 2022 7:07 am PDT

The Los Angeles Angels have relieved manager Joe Maddon of his duties following a 12-game losing streak. Los Angeles had a great start to the 2022 season, but the losing skid has dropped them out of playoff contention.

Interim manager Phil Nevin has the best chance to become the next Angels manager. He’ll have plenty of time to leave an impression on the Angels’ front office.

We know Nevin won’t be the only contender. Who will be the next manager of the Angels? Let’s check out the odds.

Los Angeles Angels Manager Odds

Phil Nevin+150
Joe Espada+300
Walt Weiss+500
Brad Ausmus+550
Bruce Bochy+600
David Cone+600
Ron Washington+600

A 12-game losing streak was the driving force behind Joe Maddon’s firing. That leaves us wondering who will be the next Angels manager? Phil Nevin has the inside track as he becomes the interim manager.

The odds for the next Angels manager show we have multiple contenders. Joe Espada has interviewed for many managerial openings but is waiting for his first opportunity. Will it come with the Angels?

Brad Ausmus managed the Angels in 2019 and is the Oakland Athletics bench coach. It wouldn’t hurt to consider a manager with World Series experience in Bruce Bochy.

Why is Phil Nevin the Favorite?

Phil Nevin has the best chance to be the Los Angeles Angels’ full-time manager because he’ll serve as their interim manager for the remainder of the 2022 season. This will be his first managerial role, but Nevin is no stranger to baseball.

Nevin had a 12-year career, making the All-Star game in 2001. He finished the season hitting .306 with 41 home runs and 126 RBIs. I’d say the key component for the next Angels manager will be his coaching experience.

  • San Francisco Giants (2017)
  • New York Yankees (2018-2021)
  • Los Angeles Angels (2022)

He has served as the third base coach for each team. This will be his first opportunity to lead a team. Nevin will have much to work with, as the Angels have two of the best players in Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani.

The latest 2022 AL MVP odds have both players among top contenders. Ohtani’s bat is starting to heat up, but he has struggled on the mound. Trout has seen his batting average drop from .319 to .284.

Nevin will have to get these players back on track to push the Angels into playoff contention.

Will the Angels Prefer World Series Experience?

The next Angels manager odds have everyone together in a tight group. It’s hard to find much value on the board, but there are intriguing names further down the list. Former San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy has caught my eye.

Bochy had a successful managerial career with the San Diego Padres, but his Hall of Fame resume comes from his time with the San Francisco Giants.

  • 3-Time World Series Champion
  • 36-17 Playoff Record

The Giants had the even year luck, winning the World Series in 2010, 2012, and 2014. Bochy’s championship pedigree should be a significant factor in the Angels’ next manager.

Bochy managed a pair of California teams from 1995-2019. Becoming the manager of the Angels allows him to stay on the west coast while managing the best player of this generation.

Who will be the next manager of the Angels? Los Angeles should take a hard look at Bochy.

State of the Los Angeles Angels

There has been much attention surrounding the Los Angeles Angels’ lack of success in the Mike Trout era. One playoff appearance in 12 years is unacceptable when you have the best player in baseball on your team.

The odds for the next Angels manager skew towards a first-time manager, but I believe they could benefit from an experienced manager. Even if it isn’t Bruce Bochy, Ron Washington appeared in back-to-back World Series as a manager.

Who will be the next Angels manager? That’ll be the question on the minds of Angels fans for the next few months. For now, all we can do is examine the next Angels manager odds.
