| May 6, 2022 7:33 am PDT

Phil Mickelson has been in the news recently, but it hasn’t been good. His comments surrounding the Saudi Golf League drew criticism from PGA Tour players and fans. Now, Mickelson is in the spotlight for his gambling issues.

A new book releasing on May 17 will reveal that Mickelson lost over $40 million after playing a role in insider trading. We should be celebrating Mickelson as he approaches the one-year anniversary of his sixth major championship.

Phil Mickelson’s gambling will continue to dominate the golf headlines. How will it affect his PGA Tour future?

Who is Phil Mickelson?

It’s unfortunate some people may know Phil Mickelson for his gambling debts and comments on the Saudi Golf League. People shouldn’t forget that Mickelson was one of the best golfers for a long time.

Take a look at his career accomplishments.

  • Six-Time Major Champion
  • Three-Time Masters Champion
  • 45 PGA Tour Wins
  • Oldest Major Champion

It looked like his best days were behind him, but Mickelson became the oldest major champion with his victory in the 2021 PGA Championship. The only thing he hasn’t done in the golf world is hold the No. 1 spot in the World Golf Rankings.

We’ll have to wait and see if Mickelson can add to his PGA Tour resume. I don’t think Phil Mickelson’s gambling losses will hurt his chances to return to the PGA Tour, but he’s still dealing with his Saudi Golf League comments.

Lefty was always a fan favorite, so there should be support. It’ll be up to Mickelson if he wants to return.

Phil Mickelson Gambling Issues

An upcoming biography on Phil Mickelson revealed that he had lost over $40 million from gambling debts. Mickelson played a role in the insider trading case of gambler Billy Walters.

A government investigation revealed Phil Mickelson’s gambling debts. Mickelson made around $40 million in 2014, but his gambling issues took a massive hit to his bank account. This spanned from 2010 to 2014.

It certainly didn’t help that Mickelson failed to win on the PGA Tour from 2014 to 2017. That only made Phil Mickelson’s gambling worse.

Mickelson was already in hot water with the PGA Tour and his sponsors for his comments on the Saudi Golf League. Phil Mickelson’s gambling losses are only going to make things worse. Honestly, we don’t know if fans will welcome him back with open arms.

He will likely play in the PGA Championship on May 19, so we’ll see what kind of reception he gets from the fans.

Mickelson’s Comments on Saudi League

The scrutiny surrounding Phil Mickelson began earlier in 2022 when he commented on the Saudi Golf League.

“We know they killed Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights. They execute people over there for being gay. Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates.”

Mickelson immediately apologized for the comments, but the damage was done. He lost multiple sponsors and the approval of fans. His remarks even hurt the Saudi Golf League, as PGA Tour players became hesitant to play for the new Golf League.

He has been out of action since making those comments in early February. The PGA Tour expects him to return for the PGA Tour, but the comments remain a big deal.

The Saudi Golf League will begin its season on June 9 at Centurion Club, just outside London. Will Mickelson play, or will he remain loyal to the PGA Tour?

Will Mickelson Return to the PGA Tour?

Right now, the plan is for Phil Mickelson to play in the PGA Championship and U.S. Open. His performance and fan reaction at the PGA Championship will tell a lot about his future.

Phil Mickelson’s gambling is another blimp on his legacy. It’ll be interesting to see if fans hold that against him. That and the Saudi Golf League will generate buzz at Mickelson’s next PGA Tour event.

How will Mickelson respond to the gambling losses? Hopefully, he’ll let his play do the talking. Please check out our sports news page for more gambling-related content.
