Sonic Favored to Be the Next U.S. Restaurant to Open in Canada

| May 23, 2022 6:12 am PDT

A few years ago, four food chains expanded to Canada. Chick-fil-A, Jollibee, Eataly, and I-N-Burger open their first stores north of the border. I-N-Out Burger opened on a temporary basis.

Now, people are wondering what could be the next restaurant to expand from the U.S. to Canada. There are many candidates, but Sonic has the best chance. There’s enough interest that Bovada has released odds.

Which big U.S. restaurant will open in Canada? Here are the odds via Bovada.

Odds for Next U.S. Restaurant in Canada

Steak N’ Shake+350
Shake Shack+500
Jack in the Box+1600
White Castle+1600

Sonic has the best odds among big U.S. restaurants to expand to Canada. Last year, there was a report that Sonic wanted to expand internationally, but we haven’t heard much in the last few months.

Most restaurants have similar odds, but Jack in the Box and White Castle provide value. Jack in the Box is popular on the west coast, but they have locations in the Midwest. White Castle isn’t as popular, as they’re in 14 states.

I will admit, Portillo’s is the only restaurant on this list that I’m not familiar with. They are popular in Illinois, which makes sense considering it’s a Chicago-based restaurant.

Let’s discuss why Sonic has an advantage over the competitors.

Why is Sonic the Favorite to Open in Canada?

Sonic has been around since the 1950s, serving as a fast-food drive-in chain. It’s unique because you can go through the drive-thru or pull into a drive-in space that allows you to order from your car.

From there, workers will bring you your food on roller skates. What other restaurants offer that?

Sonic has over 3,500 locations in the U.S. They’re more popular in the South, as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Tennessee have 100+ locations.

Last year’s report about Sonic wanting to expand internationally likely has them at the forefront of expanding to Canada. Inspire Brands also owns the following restaurants.

  • Arby’s
  • Buffalo Wild Wings
  • Jimmy John’s
  • Dunkin’ Donuts
  • Baskin-Robbins

Arby’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Baskin Robbins have locations in Canada. Dunkin’ Donuts previously operated in Canada, but they remain active in other countries.

Inspire Brands has its eyes on another restaurant in Canada. There’s a strong chance we will see Sonic in Canada in the near future.

Will Bojangles Open Operations in Canada?

Bojangles isn’t nearly as popular as Sonic, but it could find itself expanding to Canada. The fast-food chain mainly operates in the Southeast, primarily serving North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

The farthest location up North is their only restaurant in Pennsylvania. That might not exude confidence for their chances to expand to Canada, but Bojangles could explore a new market. If it works, perhaps that’ll lead to more restaurants in the Northern region of the U.S.

Bojangles is exclusive to the U.S., but they previously operated in Mexico, Ireland, China, and Jamaica.

Chick-fil-A continues to open more restaurants in Canada. Residents likely wouldn’t mind having another fast food restaurant that specializes in chicken.

Is White Castle Worth a Bet?

White Castle is one of the biggest longshots on the board, so why not talk about their chances of expanding to Canada.

The restaurant has been around for 100 years. It began in Wichita, Kansas, but has never operated in the city. It primarily serves residents in the Midwest and New York region.

Check out their most popular states.

  • Ohio – 102
  • Illinois – 93
  • Indiana – 89
  • New York – 60
  • Kentucky – 54

While there aren’t any restaurants in Canada, residents still have access to the food. Canadian grocery stores have frozen hamburgers from White Castle in their store. White Castle should have enough data to see how popular its product is in the country.

That’s something we don’t see from Sonic or Bojangles. Does that give them the upper hand? That’ll be for you to decide.
