PGA Tour Suspends LIV Golfers – How it Affects Golf Betting

| June 10, 2022 6:20 am PDT

There has been much speculation surrounding the impact of the new LIV Tour on the PGA Tour. The new Tour officially began on Thursday with the LIV Golf Invitational London. That prompted the PGA Tour to suspend players playing in the tournament.

We aren’t seeing no-name golfers play on the new Tour. There are multiple former champions and No. 1 players playing in London. The suspension will have a significant impact on the betting market.

Let’s discuss the situation with the PGA Tour suspending LIV Golfers.

Why is the PGA Tour Suspending Golfers?

There has been tension building between the PGA Tour and LIV Tour. The PGA Tour has been adamant that they won’t tolerate their players playing on the new golf Tour. They backed up the talk on Thursday, suspending players playing in the inaugural event.

The PGA Tour views the LIV as a rival league for golf. They don’t want their top golfers going back and forth between the two leagues. In May, the PGA Tour said it would not allow a waiver for players looking to skip this week’s RBC Canadian Open for the London event.

The suspension will prevent players from participating in the following events.

  • PGA Tour Events
  • Ryder Cup
  • Presidents Cup

Everyone wants to know how the suspension will affect majors. The PGA Tour doesn’t organize the majors, so they’ll make their own rules.

The U.S. Open has confirmed LIV golfers will be eligible to play in next week’s event. We haven’t heard an official announcement from the other three majors, but the Open Championship should follow suit.

We’ve already had the Masters and PGA Championship in 2022, so they don’t have to make a ruling until next season. However, we should hear an announcement soon.

There’s no doubt the PGA Tour would prefer these players not to play in majors. That’s not their decision, and they’ll have to sit back and wait for the ruling. Now it’s time to talk about the golfers who won’t appear on the PGA Tour.

Which Big Names Are Playing the LIV Tour?

Early in the process, it didn’t sound like we’d see many big-name golfers on the LIV Tour. That quickly changed with Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, and others joining the LIV Tour. Both players have won a major within the last two years.

Other major champions include Louis Oosthuizen, Sergio Garcia, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, and Charl Schwartzel. Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter have had much success in the Ryder Cup.

Those are the top players that are participating in the inaugural event. We’ll likely see more PGA Tour players play on the LIV Tour.

Here are a few players that could join the LIV Tour in the future.

  • Bryson DeChambeau
  • Patrick Reed
  • Rickie Fowler
  • Jason Kokrak

Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed aren’t playing in London but have confirmed they will play in future LIV events. They should join the golfers ineligible to play on the PGA Tour.

Rickie Fowler and Jason Kokrak haven’t confirmed they’ll join the LIV Tour, but they’ve hinted at the possibility. Fowler has fallen out of the top 100 in the World Golf Rankings, but he is a recognizable name.

We should note that multiple golfers resigned from the PGA Tour before announcing the suspensions. Mickelson is the only major champion on the LIV Tour that didn’t resign from the PGA Tour.

Future of LIV Golfers on the PGA Tour

It doesn’t sound like we’ll see a PGA Tour future for players like Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, and Lee Westwood. Now, we have to wonder how these moves will affect golf betting.

Johnson has been a top contender in major championships throughout his career. Mickelson was a big longshot when he became the oldest player to win a major in the 2021 PGA Championship.

Thankfully, we still have many big-name golfers committed to the PGA Tour. Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, and Tiger Woods remain committed to the PGA Tour.

It’ll be interesting to see how the suspensions affect PGA Tour players joining the LIV Tour. Feel free to check out the top golf betting sites to wager on the PGA Tour and LIV.
