San Diego Padres Favored to Be Juan Soto’s Next Team

The Washington Nationals have been among the worst teams in baseball in 2022. There were rumors that Juan Soto could be on the move, but it was speculation.
Well, it’s a real thing now after Soto declined a massive contract extension with the Nationals. That puts a 23-year-old with Hall of Fame potential on the trade market. Everyone in the MLB should have interest.
Where will Juan Soto get traded? Let’s check out the odds for his future team.
Odds for Juan Soto’s Next Team
Juan Soto’s trade odds stem from him declining a 14-year, $440 million contract extension. The odds tell us that Soto will land with a National League team. The New York Yankees are the lone AL team with (+900) odds or better.
The San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals have the upper hand. Each team has a pair of superstars, but San Diego’s young stars would fit Soto’s timeline.
We know the big market teams will be a popular prediction, but what about the Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners? They may not re-sign him, but Soto’s under contract through the end of 2024.
Why Are the Padres the Favorite to Land Soto?
The San Diego Padres have done an excellent job remaining in World Series contention, despite missing Fernando Tatis Jr. Manny Machado is playing at an MVP level, but the Padres would love to have another star.
Juan Soto’s trade odds have the Padres as the top contender. San Diego has shown interest from the jump; the latest report is that they are the front-runner in the Soto sweepstakes.
San Diego has been aggressive in their pursuit of Soto. It certainly doesn’t hurt that they can offer a competitive package for him. Check out a proposed trade offer from the Padres.
- C.J. Abrams, SS
- MacKenzie Gore, P
- Jake Cronenworth, SS
- Robert Hassell III, OF
C.J. Abrams and MacKenzie Gore are former top prospects who have moved to the majors. Gore recently went on the IL, but he has produced strong numbers in his rookie season.
Jake Cronenworth has made the All-Star Game in two of his first three seasons. Lastly, Robert Hassell III is the top prospect in the Padres farm system. He could serve as an outfield replacement for Soto.
Will Juan Soto’s next team be the Padres? It’ll be tough to turn down that offer.
Can the Cardinals Snag Soto?
The St. Louis Cardinals haven’t been afraid to make big moves in the trade market. Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado are leading MVP contenders after joining the team via an offseason trade.
Despite that, the Cardinals aren’t among the top contenders for the World Series. Can they become Juan Soto’s next team? Like the San Diego Padres, the Cardinals have the farm system to pull the trigger.

Nolan Gorman would be the headliner going to the Washington Nationals. The 22-year-old second baseman has 10 home runs and 23 RBIs in 55 major league games. Former first-round pitcher Jordan Walker would likely be in the trade as well.
Goldschmidt and Arenado are having great seasons, but they’re on the wrong side of 30. Adding Soto would make their World Series window much bigger. The odds for Juan Soto’s next team give the Cardinals a strong chance to land the superstar.
Where Will Juan Soto Get Traded?
It’s not often you see a player of Juan Soto’s caliber hit the trade market. He’s a career .291 hitter that averages 34 home runs and 103 RBIs over a 162-game stretch. He’s also not close to hitting his prime.
It’ll be tough to give up top prospects, but you never know how they’ll pan out. Everyone knows Soto is one of the MLB’s biggest superstars.
