Florida State Favored to Be Deion Sanders’ Next Head Coaching Job

| November 22, 2021 6:56 am PDT

Deion Sanders is arguably the greatest defensive back in NFL history. He retired from the NFL over 15 years ago but has managed to stay involved with football via coaching.

In 2020, Sanders became the head coach at Jackson State. This season, he has led them to a 9-1 record.

With his success and prolific background, there are questions whether Sanders will leave Jackson State for a big-name school.

SportsBetting.ag has the odds available for his future coaching job. Let’s check them out.

Odds for Deion Sanders Next Team as Head Coach

Virginia Tech+1000
North Texas+1200
Texas State+1200

Florida+2500

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Florida State mentioned as the top choice. Back in September, there were rumors that Deion Sanders could be their next coach. The biggest reason for that is Sanders attended Florida State from 1985-1988.

TCU represents the second option because they recently interviewed Sanders for their head coach opening. They are one of many Texas schools on this list.

A smaller school like North Texas could be intriguing. A few months ago, we had an update that had “Not Coaching Division I (Includes FCS, FBS)” as a massive favorite for Sanders’ next coaching option. Maybe the sportsbooks know something we don’t.

Now that we’ve talked about a few of the candidates, let’s dive into why Florida State is the favorite.

Why Is Florida State Favored to Be Sanders’ Next Head Coaching Position?

We briefly mentioned it but Deion Sanders played his collegiate career at Florida State. He was a unanimous All-American in his junior and senior season.

Check out his interception numbers from each season.

  • 1985: 1
  • 1986: 4
  • 1987: 4
  • 1988: 5

And of course, he went on to have a Hall of Fame career with the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, and Dallas Cowboys. He also spent time with the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens.

Following his playing career, Sanders spent four years as a head coach for a pair of high schools in Texas. He was the offensive coordinator for Trinity Christian School from 2017-2020. Sanders left the school to become the head coach at Jackson State.

We’re starting to see more and more cases of schools hiring a coach that attended the school. Some of the most notable names include Jim Harbaugh (Michigan), Kirby Smart (Georgia), and Mike Gundy (Oklahoma State).

If Florida State wants to follow in the same path, Sanders is their guy.

While there isn’t a current opening at Florida State, we may see one by the end of the season. Since Jimbo Fisher’s resignation in 2017, Florida State has not been able to sustain any success.

  • 2018: 5-7
  • 2019: 6-7
  • 2020: 3-6
  • 2021: 5-6

It’s surprising to see them struggle so much because they were a consistent top 10 team with Fisher. In 2013, they went 13-0 and won the National Championship.

Right now, it depends on what direction Florida State wants to go in. Current head coach Mike Norvell hasn’t done much but they could choose to be patient with him. We also aren’t sure if Sanders will leave Jackson State.

If so, I imagine Florida State is at the top of his list.

Outlook for Deion Sanders

Deion Sanders has shown he can successfully lead a team. This season, we saw him lead Jackson State to their first division title since 2013. They are also in position to win their first conference championship since 2007.

Sanders is going to get a few head coaching looks on name recognition alone. In my eyes, his success at Jackson State is enough to warrent interest.

I believe there will be teams that reach out to him. We’re unsure if Florida State will be one of those teams.

Make sure you keep an eye out for potential news.
