David Fizdale Favored to Be the Next Lakers Next Head Coach

| April 11, 2022 6:10 am PDT

The Los Angeles Lakers 2021-22 season will go down as one of the biggest disappointments in NBA history. They were one of the favorites to win the NBA Finals, behind a big three of LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook.

James and Davis missed extended time, while Westbrook wasn’t a good fit for Los Angeles. The Lakers missed the playoffs and will finish with no more than 33 wins.

Frank Vogel remains the Lakers head coach, but he’ll likely be out the door. Let’s see how the sportsbooks view the Lakers’ next head coach.

Lakers Next Coach Odds

David Fizdale+300
Quin Snyder+450
Doc Rivers+475
Nick Nurse+600
Sam Cassell+700
Steve Clifford+700
Mike Brown+750
Kenny Atkinson+800
Terry Stotts+1200
Mark Jackson+1800

The Los Angeles Lakers will likely fire head coach Frank Vogel. Vogel led the Lakers to the NBA Championship in 2020, but he’s coming off back-to-back down seasons. Once that move becomes official, we’ll shift our focus to who will be the Lakers’ next coach.

Thankfully, BetOnline gives us the Lakers head coach odds. Former Memphis Grizzlies head coach David Fizdale has the best odds, but there are a host of contenders. Let’s talk about Fizdale and the other top contenders.

This list represents the top 10 candidates. Feel free to visit BetOnline to see the complete list.

David Fizdale (+300)

David Fizdale spent nearly 20 years as an assistant coach before taking his first head coaching job with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2016. Fizdale led the Grizzlies to the playoffs, but a 7-12 start to the 2017-18 season led to his firing.

He spent two seasons with the New York Knicks but went 21-83. Fizdale was out of the NBA for nearly two years before the Lakers brought him in as an assistant coach.

That immediately gives him the upper hand as the Lakers’ next head coach. We know LeBron James will have a big say in the Lakers’ next coach. Fizdale was an assistant with the Miami Heat when James won back-to-back titles.

I’d say that’s why the Lakers coach odds have Fizdale as the favorite.

Quin Snyder (+450)

Quin Snyder has emerged as a top candidate for the Los Angeles Lakers’ next coach. Snyder spent the 2011-12 season as a Lakers assistant coach. He is wrapping up his eighth season as head coach of the Utah Jazz.

This season will mark his sixth straight playoff appearance. The Jazz have been great in the regular season, but check out their playoff finishes with Snyder.

  • 2016-17: Conference Semifinals
  • 2017-18: Conference Semifinals
  • 2018-19: First Round
  • 2019-20: First Round
  • 2020-21: Conference Semifinals

The latest 2022 NBA Finals odds have the Jazz at (+2500). Snyder remains committed to the Jazz, but could another playoff disappointment lead to him leaving? The Lakers coach odds believe so.

Doc Rivers (+475)

Doc Rivers is an intriguing option for the Los Angeles Lakers. He has never been with the Lakers organization, but he spent seven seasons as head coach of the LA Clippers. His Los Angeles ties could make him the Lakers’ next head coach.

The biggest issue for Rivers has been making a deep playoff run. He had many great Clippers teams but never made it to the Conference Finals. Rivers did win an NBA Championship with the Boston Celtics.

He has had success with the Philadelphia 76ers, but there are rumors that Daryl Morey wants to reunite James Harden with Mike D’Antoni.

There is some interest on the Lakers side. The Lakers head coach odds suggest he’s one of the top contenders to replace Frank Vogel.

Who Will Be the Next Coach of the Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers had a terrible 2021-22 season, but the allure of coaching LeBron James and Anthony Davis should make it a desirable opening.

David Fizdale is the favorite to be the Lakers’ next head coach, but the odds have everyone close together. Could we see a surprise coach take over for the Lakers? Maybe Mark Jackson at (+1800).

Who will be the Lakers’ next coach? That’s a question we’ll be asking early in the offseason. The top NBA betting sites should update you on any NBA specials or props.
