  • Deshaun Watson Suspended 6 Games
  • Jacoby Brissett Expected to Become Browns Starting Quarterback
  • Cleveland’s Odds Improve Following Suspension

The 2022 NFL offseason saw a wild carousel of quarterback movement. Perhaps the biggest move was Deshaun Watson going to the Cleveland Browns. That put the Browns in Super Bowl contention, but there was one caveat.

Watson faced a suspension after numerous sexual assault allegations. The NFL finally made its ruling, suspending Watson for the first six games of the 2022 season.

There are many opinions about his suspension, compared to someone like Calvin Ridley. That’s a conversation for a different day. Instead, we’ll check it out from a betting perspective.

Browns Odds Following Deshaun Watson’s Suspension

  • AFC North Odds: (+230)
  • AFC Conference Odds: (+1200)
  • Super Bowl 57 Odds: (+2500)

Believe it or not, the Cleveland Browns’ odds improved following Deshaun Watson’s suspension. They had (+1400) AFC odds and (+3000) Super Bowl odds ahead of the suspension. Bettors can visit our NFL blogs page to view the odds for each title.

They didn’t improve because Watson is a bad player. He’ll likely be rusty after missing a year, but he’ll be better than Jacoby Brissett. I imagine the sportsbooks anticipated a longer suspension.

Cleveland would be in trouble if they didn’t have Watson for the whole year. They may be okay with him missing six games. Check out their opponents in the first six weeks.

  • Week 1: @ Panthers
  • Week 2: Vs. Jets
  • Week 3: Vs. Steelers
  • Week 4: @ Falcons
  • Week 5: Vs. Chargers
  • Week 6: Vs. Patriots

They’ll have their hands full with the Chargers, but they’ll likely open as the favorite in the other five games. It certainly doesn’t hurt that four of their six games are at home.

The schedule is much tougher down the stretch, with six total games against the Ravens, Bengals, Bills, and Buccaneers. It’s extremely important to have Watson for that stretch.

Maybe Cleveland struggles and goes 3-3 through the first six games. It’s more realistic to say they go 4-2 or 5-1. After all, this team has many weapons outside of quarterback. Nick Chubb and Amari Cooper lead the offense, while Myles Garrett is the star on defense.

Will the NFL Increase the Length of Watson’s Suspension?

Yes-130
No-110

We already have a betting opportunity for Deshaun Watson’s six-game suspension. BetOnline believes the NFL could come back and increase the length.

As I mentioned in the intro, many people are unhappy with the suspension. We’ve seen players do far less and receive longer suspensions. Will public outcry be enough to tip the NFL’s hand?

It’ll be interesting to see if the NFL pursues further action. This process spanned throughout the offseason, so it’s not like they quickly made a decision. It just sets a bad precedent compared to other suspensions.

Personally, I don’t see the NFL changing the length of the suspension. I can’t remember a case of a player receiving a longer suspension unless new evidence comes to light. Maybe that happens in the next few weeks, but I wouldn’t count on it

As of now, the only thing pushing for a longer suspension is public outcry. Most people wanted Watson suspended for the entire season, so fan reaction isn’t anything new. Why would the NFL take a different stance now?

Bettors are free to make their pick, but I don’t see the NFL suspending Watson for more games. He probably deserves it, but that decision would’ve come in the first ruling.

Browns’ 2022 Outlook Without Watson

The odds for the Cleveland Browns tell us they should be okay without Deshaun Watson. They caught a major break with him missing the easy part of their schedule. Two more games would’ve seen him miss crucial division matchups.

Watson likely won’t be 100 percent for those games, but he should play up to his potential towards the end of the 2022 season. Maybe extra rest puts him in a better spot to lead Cleveland on a Super Bowl run.
