AFL Sportsbooks View Marcus Bontempelli as the Early 2022 Brownlow Favorite
- Top AFL bookmakers release opening odds for the 2022 Brownlow Medal winner.
- Marcus Bontempelli is the early favorite, ahead of Sam Walsh and Ollie Wines.
- Wines will defend the title when the new seasons starts in March 2022.
If it only feels like a matter of weeks since Ollie Wines clinched the 2021 Brownlow Medal, that’s because it is.
The Port Adelaide star polled a record 36 votes to finish three clear of Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli, who is the bookies’ early favorite to win the award in 2022.
Yes, that’s right. Although the previous AFL campaign ended less than a month ago, you can already bet on the 2022 Brownlow Medal winner.
Let’s look at the early odds for the Brownlow Medal in 2022 before examining all the leading contenders.
Early 2022 AFL Brownlow Medal Odds
As I already mentioned, the leading Aussie Rules betting sites view Marcus Bontempelli as the early favorite to win the 2022 Brownlow Medal.
Yet, as the bookies’ odds suggest, the race for next season’s Brownlow Medal is destined to be fiercely contested.
Carlton’s up-and-coming sensation Sam Walsh is expected to push Bontempelli all the way, while last season’s medalist Ollie Wines won’t relinquish his crown without a fight.
Darcy Parish and Jack Steele find themselves just outside the group of frontrunners, with 2020 champ Lachie Neale close behind.
Dustin Martin will be eager to add to his 2017 triumph, while two-time Brownlow Medalist Nat Fyfe is back in the mix after winning the award in 2015 and 2019.
What Makes Bontempelli the 2022 Brownlow Favorite?
If it weren’t for a sizeable injury towards the back end of last season, Bontempelli would have almost certainly gotten his hands on the 2021 Brownlow Medal.
The 25-year-old led the way for much of last season’s count but failed to poll after round 19. Wines, meanwhile, took the lead in round 22 before snaring two votes in round 23 to win the award.
Marcus Bontempelli finishes second in the Brownlow with 33 votes.September 19, 2021
“The Bont” was immense for the Bulldogs throughout 2021. Not only did he kick 31 goals, but he also ranked second on the club’s disposals leaderboard, as well as third for contested possessions.
Let’s not forget that he dragged his team all the way to the Grand Final, too. If he repeats that feat next year, he will surely find himself atop the Brownlow rankings.
Who Else Could Scoop the Prize?
Given that no player has defended the Brownlow title in over two decades, Wines certainly has a job on his hands. That said, he could compete for the award again.
Elsewhere, Walsh is an interesting candidate. Although the 2019 AFL Rising Star has established himself as a key member of Carlton’s side, it will be tough for him to outshine some of the high-profile names on the list.
Both Oliver and Petracca will be confident of clinching the honor next year. The former finished third in last season’s count, while the latter sealed the 2021 Norm Smith Medal.
